Be interesting to see how this plays out. There are lots of segregated, women-only spaces, like curves. Now an Islamic man wants gender separation, not because of feminist ideology but for religious reasons.
This is a kind of follow up to the issue brought up in the past week about a man wanted segregated groups because he is Islamic and all the wrist wringing that popped up when that happened.
What the fallout will be. Will white women win out over freedom of religion? If this Muslim isn't white, will the white girl dominate a visible minority? Or is this a situation where white-female entitlement runs out?

It's not really an issue of freedom of religion. The world doesn't have to bend backwards to accommodate your religious views according to Canadian law. All that is required is reasonable accommodation. If the Dojo decided to do nothing except not require this particular student to physically interact with females, they wouldn't be doing anything wrong.
I think both parties are being selfish and requiring the general public to tip toe around their needs. You shouldn't have to segregate a karate class to accommodate one person's religion, and you shouldn't have to keep it integrated to accommodate one person's political philosophies. The dojo owner also has rights in this, and he should be able to operate his business without having to change reasonable policies for the sake of a single individual's needs.

I agree. But we are not dealing with reasonable people.
[–][deleted]2 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
It doesn't matter who you're dealing with. The law states that reasonable accommodation is required. Even the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal, with all its asinine history wouldn't likely require this dojo to accommodate either of them to the degree they have chosen to on their own.

Does it really affect the class that much? I've been to loads of martial arts classes where the group was split in one way or another, it's not a big deal, just work with the partner(s) you're paired up with. If someone doesn't want to work with you, don't work with them.
Also, the Dojo owner wasn't forced to accomodated his beliefs, he chose to. If he'd said "Sorry, I don't run my class that way" it would have been his right to do so, instead he decided to put the guy at the other end of the hall from the women.
Incidentally, if she ever travels to her school's Honbu Dojo in Tokyo she'll be treated in exactly the same way.
That's not my point. If that's how the dojo wants to do things, fine, but nobody should require a business owner to change their practices to suit them and only them.
You may be right in that the dojo operator just decided that was fine with him and changed the way he does things, but as with any business, he may have also felt that a big mess would be made if he didn't change his policies.

He's not required to. He was just asked to and he agreed.
Okay? It's speculative, but even assuming it's true there's always a social price to pay for running an organisation one way and not another. I don't see how that can be eliminated.

Wouldn't be the first brown skinned man strung by his toes in the name of white women.

Here's the thing though. Sonja was not treated any differently by her instructor. She was not given substandard training. She was not discriminated against in any way by the school. She has an issue with another student who she feels she is entitled to interact with despite his choice not to do so. The evidence of this is clear in her vocal opposition to his refusal to acknowledge her. While I do not agree with the mans proselytizing, he is nonetheless free to do so. No one there is being forced to join Islam for his sake.
[–]So_youre_the_one-2 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
She was though. From the article: "The teacher 'would put all the women on one side and then offer a side for the Muslim man so there wouldn’t be any problems,'" She was no longer allowed to access the other half of the room
[–]Jesus_marley4 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
So what? were the women removed? were they given substandard training? No. They were asked to stand on one side of the room. They were not treated or trained any differently than he was. It is called reasonable accomodation. There is nothing other than how the class was arranged that changed. No one was treated any differently in terms of class instruction or attendance.
He has a right not to interact with her, or be forced to interact with her based on the Charter. She has no more right to force herself on him than he has in forcing her to wear a burkha.

Yes he has this right, though his behaviour makes him an ass (or to put it more politely he is being pretty rude).
[–]fia_bui3 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
He thinks it's rude to talk to women in that context, she thinks it's rude not to.

He is wrong
she thinks it's rude not to.
and she is right. Some cultures are just inferior and don't deserve respect.
[–]fia_bui2 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Let me guess, your culture is the superior one?
I'm not allowed to access the women's toilets. This isn't discrimination.
[–]So_youre_the_one2 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
But would you consider it discrimination to no longer be able to access half of the facilities in the men's room because it made someone uncomfortable?
Segregating people on the basis of gender and privacy is an accepted part of pretty much every human society out there, the only question is to what degree, which varies from culture to culture.
If a man using a building I was working in had a cultural/religious requirement to use a stall with at least five feet of free space to either side, then I'd be fine with that provided I still got to use a loo.
We already segregate half of all bathroom facilities in most buildings (but not all) by gender, noone complains that men can't use the women's and women can't use the men's. Why is it different to do the same for floor space in a dojo? If she needed access to the other half of the room to perform a technique, and wasn't allowed, I could see her point, but I somewhat doubt her regular training routine involved using the full length of the hall anyway. Not unless they were doing something very different to the Aikido I've seen in the past.
Bottom line is, I don't need access to every stall in the building, I just need one. She doesn't need access to every part of the room, she just needs the bit she'd usually use. So giving another part of the room she wasn't using to someone else isn't an issue.
Good points. I still haven't made up my mind on this issue but thought I'd play devil's advocate here since at the time of my first post I only found one viewpoint being espoused. I tend to agree with yellowcushion's view above
Fair enough.

Power, then 15, who had been a student at East Coast Yoshinkan Aikido
I wonder what would happen if a Shinto guy walked in and asked for religious accommodation...
Hell, she'd probably come up with some bullshit like, "His water purification rituals oppress me!"
[–]fia_bui4 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Holy shit, Yoshinkan? I just noticed that, now I'm actually impressed, those guys are pretty hardcore. Afaik though they're also pretty traditional and their head dojo in Tokyo is segregated. (source, read a book about them)

Someone should tell her that.

Gender vs religion: Woman refused haircut by Muslim barber highlights problem of colliding rights
[–][deleted]4 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
A similar event occured in Ottawa and was brought to the human rights tribunal. The barber was muslim and didn't cut women's hair. He did however have an agreement with a salon down the street and when needed, a stylist would come to the shop and cut women's hair. That, is the textbook definition of reasonable accomodation, and this woman, who happens to be an activist, is wasting tax dollars on this nonsense.
Beyond that, why shouldn't a barber be able to choose not to cut women's hair altogether? It's basically a different profession anyway, and nobody would require carpenters to also be plumbing experts just for the sake of accommodation.
I almost hope she wins, and that the court orders him to cut her hair. It'd be hilarious to see the result.
He shouldn't have to talk to them or shake hands with them if he doesn't want to. You can't force people to interact with someone else.
Assuming that's exactly what was on those leaflets, he shouldn't have been handing them out in the dojo, it's pretty threatening to be honest. Somehow I suspect that there's more to it than that though.
Something someone said on twitter isn't news. Unless they're a politician or someone of consequence or someone connected to the story it's not relevant.

I don't get this "second class citizen" shit. Separating 2 groups isn't inherently judgemental. It's not like they were made to hide in the basement. I agree it's moronic, but not oppressive.
Second, she mentioned him not shaking her hand. Again, the guy sounds like a major asshole, but it's his business who he shakes hands with. The presence of a misogynist doesn't automatically place you in second class status.
And the whole handing out pamphlets bit seems highly dubious. I wish they had a picture of one, or someone else around to corroborate.
[–]edtastic2 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Since we support gender equality rather than unlimited religious rights that extend to selective gender segregation in any place of your choosing I think for argument sake we'd come down on the side of encouraging sex tolerance across the board.
On the other hand MRA's support male spaces and feminist female (safe) spaces. The classroom is not a sensible place to implement this sort of segregation unless the school itself is segregated by gender.
It's a lot like dueling bangos.
