Hi folks
I posted a few days ago about a horrendous experience I'd had encountering my first real-life, no-kidding, ultra-feminist bigot in the wild. Since then, I've had no contact with this person (I let the email trail hang on the basis that I wanted to be the grown-up in all this) but I've spoken about it with a few friends, including women, from whom I've had unequivocal support.
Long term, I need a solution. I'll meet this woman again - she's on a committee with me - and when these subjects come up, I'm going disagree with her. I'm going to be careful to examine my assumptions, as any person should, and not be drawn into her idiot's style of discourse. Still, I'm certainly going to point out, politely but firmly, where she's wrong.
At the same time, I recognise I'm never going to change this woman's mind. It feels like arguing with a devoutly religious person. Her arguments are not based on rationality, reason or logic so responding with those things is pointless and I don't want to be responsible for her monopolising the committee's time with her multi-minute diatribes. No, it's not my fault, but everyone knows what'll happen if we set her off, and that will make me and our shared cause unpopular - I know it makes her unpopular.
This is something that I suspect comes up a lot. It's an important point of principle, but you can't win with these people. The votes will go through because everyone is terrified to object and be seen as misogynist (privately many will voice objections). Arguing with them is easily misinterpreted as provoking unpleasantness for the sake of unpleasantness, and let's be clear, it does create unpleasantness; it's just for a good and important reason.
I'm not really very sure what the best approach is.
