possibly unpopular opinion time: 18 as the age of majority is arbitrary. Nothing special happens when you turn 18, there's no significant developmental milestone that happens in all humans at 18, there's no glowing hand implant that starts glowing when you turn 18 (and presumably Richard Jordan comes chasing you down.)
Not that there's anything wrong with arbitrary. Arbitrariness doesn't necessarily imply a value judgement. When we were writing the laws we had to pick a number to apply to everyone, we picked 18, and that's fine. To me, that general age seems to be about the right time when we can expecting people to become responsible for their actions. But to claim it isn't arbitrary just seems disingenuous to me.
And then when we ignore this arbitrariness, it can lead to unreasonable outcomes. A 17 year old sending nude pictures of themselves (voluntarily) to their 18 year old partner can land them both on the sex offender registry and in prison. Does that really make sense when a few months later it would be completely legal? Do we really expect that the 17 year old will have a significant change in responsibility or maturity in that year? We act like it, but it isn't a reasonable expectation.
