There's something about being able to release control but I've found in our present society it's almost always the most high achieving men and women who want someone to take control at the end of the day. It's an obsession with perfection I believe, like a disruption of the anima/inner feminine in this case.

Instead of a warm supportive wife who cares for you and supports you, the mind of men can go to different places. This is where BDSM and subsequent fetishes comes from in my own personal uneducated opinion.

I think it's a mix of conditioned and organic. If I have a harsh inner critic maybe it's nice to have a dominant type gf who pushes me harder.
