Has anyone experienced Housing Discrimination?

Trying to find decent, affordable shared housing in london and coming across, no men or females preferred all the time.

Or worse, phoning up ads only to hear then that they would prefer a woman.

In the US, there are laws to prevent that. There are restrictions against bad credit and criminal history. But a land lord can not say it's because you're a man, women, skin color, handicap and such. They can use plenty of other excuses to replace those, but they can't say them.

For example, they may not want to rent to a man, they can't say it's because you're a man (this is America, we can sue the shit out of them), but they have a pretty deep bag of other things they can legally hold against you that they can and will fish for because you're something they don't like.

It's not a really big deal here, but it does happen. But the "reason" given won't be because of gender or something, it will be about something else.

yep.

was looking for a house for a while, was on the local council waiting list for council accommidation.

was passed over in favour of 5 single mums for the new builds because they needed it more, including one who had been evicted from a previous council house because of anti social behaviour.

I remember when I was looking for a place to stay about half the places that were with room mates(renting out a room) were for women only. I'm in USA.

Upon moving into Brantford, Ontario I'd come to learn that all of the apartments in a particularly upscale little pad were reserved solely for women.

Countless score advertisements for exclusively female room mates, too. I ended up having to shack up with a bunch of drug addicts and a squatter, while living in a refurbished crackhouse on Dalhousie St.

Luckily I found myself a stable and genuinely nice place to live, but it meant that I had to hustle really hard and make connections in the city for myself to find another place. What few listings they had for males in town for 1-bedrooms were in incredibly sketchy places.
