2 years is not enough time to decide. This makes no sense, so let's say two people move in together and one partner makes $100k and the other makes $30k. The lower income partner stays in the relationship because it's easy and they can split rent. 2 years and 1 day later they meet another person and break up. Now they are entitled to 3-5 years of spousal support, as well as half all assets, and if the person making $30K a year also had $50K in student debt, now they only have $25K in student debt.

Oh Christ. Seriously? They're introducing an actual "Common-Law Marriage" law, in this day and age? That is awful!

Summary for those who don't like reading full articles: after two years of living with an unmarried partner in British Colombia, the couple is considered to be sharing properties and assets the same way a married couple is, and must divide out everything "evenly" if they separate.

As someone who has plans to move to Canada in the near future...this would put me off. I've lived with my partner for 7 years, who would be moving with me.

There's no way I could support that. I understand it's in BC, and we're looking at Toronto, but if something such as this came in to Toronto before we moved there then there's no way the move would happen, simple as.

This will destroy relationships in a way that the world has likely never seen and make men more wary than ever about increasing the committment in their relationships.

This is truly and utterly vile and I hope some bad shit happens those who devised this.

My common law relationship of over ten years was nearing its end. When I found out about this law coming in I pushed ahead before this could come into being as well as locked it down with a separation agreement. Kept the home which was in my name but lost a lot of cash to appease enough to keep the larger asset pools without having to fight.

It was my eye opening moment to see that through little fault of my own (she wanted to go on an adventure with other boys) I could lose half of what I earned through the time with her when she worked very little and I put her through post secondary.... Twice.

My current girl is well aware how jaded and skittish I now am when she brings up any living together fantasies. It is taking a risk with loaded dice. She is wonderful but I have no idea what kind of woman she shall be in the future.

On a side note this subreddit gave me a lot of wisdom and strength when I was going through my seperation though I usually only lurk. Thanks.
