So just today, I was with my girlfriend at a fast food restaurant (we both used to work there and know all the employees), and I made a verbal faux pas, I can't remember exactly what it was, but it was trivial.

One of the employees heard it and made a comment like "Well gee, I'm glad I know who the smarter one is in this relationship! And it's not TechnoSam..."

I'm an engineering student, currently getting paid to develop robotic control software. My girlfriend is a college drop out.

Now I love my girlfriend more than anything in the world. And our friend was clearly, and obviously joking, and I have no ill will towards anyone about this situation.

But I just think it's strange that we can laugh and make jokes about me being unintelligent for small things like this, but society frowns upon such jokes if they are directed to women. Does anyone see my point or am I crazy?
