One of the first things that I'd do, is start liquidating assets. Find an excuse to sell the house and move into an apartment. Cash out the investment account. You'll have to be creative here. Not knowing anything about this woman makes it tough to give advice in that regard. But anything that you can do to not have anything to fight over when the divorce papers come, is going to help you.

I might use that money to pay for her education. Why? Because if she is more capable of being gainfully employed, due to your sacrifices (selling assets) the less likely it would be that a judge is going to saddle you with a big alimony payment.

I went through something like this myself. I put my ex-wife through school. And because she had finished an education she could use to earn a living, near the time when we split up, I didn't have to pay anything.

Start separation gradually and amicably, but don't give the game away, flatter, it would help if she's fucking another guy. Putting your assets in your mothers name might work.

It's possible to have a non-contested divorce, but both parties would have to be on pretty good terms and not be pissed off at each other.

In some cases, it's possible to offer monetary incentives to the other person to agree with the divorce.

I would first check the rules of your state - what are alimony laws? 3 years does not seem like much.

I will say this - any financial processes you have NOW stay in place for the divorce - so start making changes...like separate account for household expenses etc...make it so you are in complete control of your finances.

I cannot see 3 years being as a valid timeline for courts to rake you over the coals. I was with my husband for 6 years and could have asked for alimony in my state and i think the weekly amount was like $25...pretty similar situation - he worked full time - i worked part time and went to school full time - our house was in both our names - cars in both our names....the thing is i just wanted the fuck out. Told him he could have EVERYTHING just never talk to me again.....

Also, start cashing payroll checks and depositing them instead of DD - again, financial situation stays static - so make the 'static' not your whole paycheck.

Sorry dude, there is no way she is going to let you off cheap. She's going to play the vagimony card, you are going to have to pay for her school, etc. Sorry but it's the truth. But, if you really want your freedom it can be had...for a price. Think of it like taking off a band-aid, it's going to suck whether you agonize and put it off or just do it.
