For the patriarchy, it's a bit wide. But consider the following: Men commit suicide much more than women, EVEN when they use the same methods, because suicidal prevention programs dont work for men and half of men left therapy. Men go to jail much more often and get longer sentences for the same crime. Men are much more likely to be homeless. If you count childhood rape, prison rape, and wartime rape, men are more likely to be raped than women. Domestic violence between the genders are equal, and if you count nonreciprocal violence, commit domestic violence in 70% of cases, and yet there are hundreds of shelters for women but almost none for men, DESPITE men paying the vast majority of taxes. Men do the worst and most dangerous jobs while being 92% of those killed on the job. Men in the US and UK do almost twice the amount of paid work women do, and if you account for unpaid labor, men did 1-4 more hours per week than women did. Despite this, women are responsible for 80+% of consumer spending. In relationships, women are more likely to use control on our partners. Men are more likely to be victims of murders, assault, and robbery. Men live shorter life spans in every country in the world. I could go on and on.

Both genders have more empathy for women. Both genders associate positive traits with women and negative traits for women. Men lack an ingroup bias while women have a massive one.

Hmmmm... what type of brother in law is he?

Husband-of-sister? Or brother-of-wife?

The reason I ask is because I find that research and statistics rarely ever convinces anyone of anything. That only works if someone used logic to form their opinion to begin with. For most people, you have to look at the relationship dynamics and figure out what personal needs of his he is trying to fulfill with his the belief structure (or claimed belief structure).

You can't debunk 'the patriarchy" because it's such a fuzzy, amorphous term.

People tend to make leaps from 'most of the people in power are men" to "women are oppressed" because they think men don't care about women.

I can just as easy assert without evidence that having most of the powerful people being men is great for women because men care about women more than they care about men.

In order to demonstrate 'women are oppressed' or 'women have it worse' you have to abandon stereotypes, and consider the situation for men and women. Even if your brother-in-law can list one hundred bad things that happen to women it doesn't demonstrate oppression of women, until it can be clearly established that the situation for men was better. If men were in a much worse situation then even though things were bad for women, it wrong to describe it as oppression of women.

Every time I bring this up, the person claiming women have been oppressed forever has never seriously considered the situation for men.

What I suggest you do is ask your BIL to clearly define 'the patriarchy', what his evidence for it is, and what evidence would change his mind.

In any case, here is my list of studies showing we care more about women than men.

One example, homelessness. Way more homeless people are male (75percent in the UK) than female. Ideas about patriarchy and male privilege, well it's clearly not a universal privilege is it. I tend to lean more now towards capitalism as being a more fitting explanation. Men tend to be the worker bees just consumed by the system, that also consumes women. However I don't deny that the ruling classes, police, judiciary etc is overwhelmingly male and that's an issue. Why? How would you feel if they were overwhelmingly female, that's why. Speaking of the police and judiciary, a majority of prisoners are poorly educated, many have never-diagnosed learning difficulties or dyslexia. Vast majority of the prison population is male. Patriarchy? It's more complicated than that. So yes and no. Incidentally I don't think a matriarchy would necessarily be any different. A balanced society way better. Not many mothers are denied access to their children by fathers - patriarchy? I don't think so. But I also realize what an issue male sexual violence is, male violence towards other men and women. Look at any local news page - who is committing the violence? It isn't women in vast majority of cases. It's more than patriarchy I think is the real answer. Nowadays. Not so long ago you didn't have women interviewers on TV and no women newsreaders! Not that ago women couldn't get mortgages in their own right etc, clearly unfair and not how we live now. But it wasn't so long ago. Men are so often silenced by women who always say that women have it worse. They don't seem to have the language to be able to say that supporting men doesn't mean lack of support for women. And I hope that changes.
