The wage gap does exist, however you attempt to control for it - it's on the order of under 5% rather than the widely cited 30% though, and in some sectors women are paid more than men.

The wage gap refers to full time men versus full-time women earnings. It does not account for job type, hours worked, experience, education relevant to occupation, etc.

Blaming the patriarchy is based on pointing out that those things occur within patriarchal societies. This is problematic because something occurring within a framework does not mean it's due to it. Crime occurs in Democratic societies but that doesn't mean crime is due to democracy. Further looking at matriarchal societies like the Iroquois shows similar elements propping up, lending further scrutiny to the notion that it's as simple as "because of the patriarchy".

In essence both the specific claim regarding the wage gap and the broad one regarding the patriarchy is based on working backwords and stopping when you reach a conclusion that you like, regardless of whether you can work further back to find the root cause or an accurate measure.

The wage gap compares the total amount paid by employers to men, versus the total amount paid by employers to women. It leaves out payments from a husband to a wife for family support. So it's got to be wrong.

Simply put, the wage gap exists because men work more hours than women. There are other factors involved but that is the simplest way I can put it.

The majority of the sighted "wage gap" only focuses on overall monies earned. So a woman whom chooses to have a child of her own(I use the word own only because she has ultimate deciding factor) and lives off the earnings of her SO for x number of years.. has no income and she chose to do so.(EDIT: or welfare keeping live in boyfriends with income but not reported, is wide spread.) Years of income and work experience are lost in this process. Further men work more time overall then women giving them an increased income that is augmented by the fact their SO (mother of their children) has lost time in economic activity .. less work experience typically leads to less pay. The pay gap is mainly a result of female choices.. There isn't a "patriarchy" to speak of imvho wrt the pay gap in western cultures. "Patriarchy" in this case is a result of the choices women make economically and biologically speaking.

Edit: There is one place where there is a pay gap, it's the top 1%.
