I'm not sure, but I think medicare works into this as well. It seems that Medicare covers 80% of prostate screenings every 12 months for Medicare eligible adults over the age of 50, which is where virtually 100% of prostate cancer occurs.

It does seem weird / inequitable that other screenings for over 50 people have to be 100% covered, though, such as the colorectal cancer, and osteoperosis screenings. Though Prostate cancer is entirely ignored.

To be clear, those are the services that providers are required to cover with no copay. What they cover apart from that is still up to the insurer.

I keep asking those in favor of PPACA to explain why all these preventative care and maintenance services should be mandatorily covered by insurance, but I keep getting blank stares and no real answer.

Maybe I'm hopelessly naive, but uh,

Insurance is a form of risk management primarily used to hedge against the risk of a contingent, uncertain loss. (From wikipedia.)

Now if an insurance company chose to lower premiums for patients who underwent cancer screenings and routine checkups, that would make sense because it helps mitigate that company's risk of serious ailments becoming more serious and more expensive. MANDATING that they cover those preventive services would be akin to mandating all car insurance covers oil changes and tire rotations. Expensive, unnecessary, and downright stupid, not to mention a GUARANTEED expense, not an uncertain loss like an accident or theft. Why is that insurable at all?

Does this make sense to anyone else, or are the blank stares justified?
