Not to nitpick, but I believe the "1 in 4" stat was that 1 in 4 women are raped - not that 1 in 4 men are rapists.

Here's my view point on this:

Years ago I dated a woman, let's call her Allison. Allison told me that she lost her virginity when she was raped. I felt bad and feared for the sex between the two of us. Thankfully, she was a freak in bed and did things that some women don't like doing and was open to trying other things. Her rape was less than a year before we met. So I figured that my belief that women who were raped became sexually afraid to the point of not even wanting to have sex was wrong. I was in my mid-20s, hadn't quite figured out the world yet.

Later on I got her to talk about the rape. She explained that it was her long time boyfriend who raped her. Before they were doing oral and even anal, but she wasn't ready to go vaginal. He talked her into it and she gave in. As she told me the story the one question I was too afraid to ask, at risk of not getting laid that night, was "How were you raped?" Because as she told the story, she did it willingly because of his pathetic begging. She didn't like that she put out and when she told her friends one said "OMG! Allison, you were raped!"

I was expecting a story where she was possibly drugged and woke up naked with cum dripping out of her or one where she was held down and raped. It ended up being rape= feeling bad about having sex.

That's where I think this 1 in 4 thing comes from. That's where I think most of this anti-rape in college is coming from, students (and Allison was not just a college student, but a psychology major) give in to the pressure of having sex and then think that they were raped because putting out is better than listening to a grown man whine for sex. This is kind of supported by the fact that many of the anti-rape laws that are being proposed are based on the idea that the woman has to give an enthusiastic "Yes" and not an "I guess" or "If it will shut you the fuck up." It also explains the lack of due process. If Allison accused her ex of rape, it would be clear that it wasn't rape, but take way the due process and all we need is an accusation.

Long and short, that claim is made any time sexual assault comes up. So often that people who want to believe it will without question. When you do point out stats, it either becomes 1 in 4 is sexually assaulted, to the point of including the dreaded "male gaze" as a type of sexual assault. It's a big, bad bullet point, and feminism cares about how people fear something instead of their actual rate of victimhood.
