The categories are super broad.

"Social sciences" could be anything from economics to psychology to history to language, etc.

The various engineering disciplines vary considerably in demand and as a consequence pay as well.

Men and women don't enter these various "sub fields" in the same proportions.

This is a common tactic. Using broad categories as if it's the "same work" when it almost never is.

That study is flawed in sever ways. Here is a link discussing it.

Note that the study does not demonstrate that any of the gap is due to discrimination. It merely doesn't explain some of it after accounting for some factors, and merely assumes that the rest is due to discrimination. There is no reason to prefer the explanation of discrimination to the explanation that the gap is due to, for example, the fact that men commute longer to work on average and women on average work jobs with higher job security and lower benefits. Despite this the study acts like it has demonstrated that women are receiving equal pay for equal work, when it has merely not accounted for many of the factors that effect pay.

I expect that we'll see more deliberately flawed "discrimination" studies like this one as feminists try to justify promoting their lobby for the Paycheck Fairness Act, which has already failed to pass once.

The only thing I would add to this article is that a significant number of women graduating from college (probably at least 5%) either had a baby while in college or were planning on staying home and having one after college. I suspect the feminists advocacy researchers at AAUW included them.

Basically some women will lie in order to gain the advantage and all women will defend them to gain that advantage.

These studies are worthless. It is well-known that men take more dangerous jobs, work longer hours, work for more years without gaps, and negotiate for higher pay for aggressively. For example, the majority of customer service workers are women, but the majority of fire fighters are men. Women who have children also resist working overtime, but men with children will work overtime more readily. Many women also take several years off work when their children are young, but men often don't stop working when their children are born. Men also are more aggressive about negotiating pay raises, and they will say things like "give me a raise or I'll quit." Women are reluctant to make such threats. To be statistically valid, a study needs to compare two people who work in the same field with the same education, years of experience, and career goals. If you compare like that, the wage gap will disappear.

There is a significant gap for many job categories, but the study points out that only about one third of the gap cannot be explained by other factors. This 6.6% differential may be the result of discrimination, overt factors such as women's reluctance to negotiate a higher salary, or covert factors that weren't controlled for. For example, suppose men are more likely to have co-op or internship experience, or enter the workforce earlier, and have more work experience. That would be a non discriminatory factor that the study did not detect.

More pernicious was the conclusion that the student loan debt hurt women more, since they made less. Watch for the AAUW to call for more scholarships and Pell grants for female students - in the name of equality, of course.
