What would be interesting and useful is to include the gender of the person posting misogynistic tweets - I sure I’ve seen a study/ statistic that shows women post the highest number of misogynistic/ bullying social media posts directed at other women.

There was a study done that showed that "people of color" are the most likely to post racist things on social media. This will probably turn out similar.

Data is beautiful

I hope some guys adapt it to find misandry too. That's going to give some interesting statistics

I hope some guys adapt it to find misandry too.

Now, that would be an excellent hack; I'm sure someone will get it up and running before long.

I'm obviously no tech wiz, but wouldn't that be almost as easy as copy, paste, replace all offensive feminine pronouns/stereotypes with masculine ones?

[–]NotherThrowaway2841 point 5 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Mostly, yeah, but do think also of all the vernacular, turns of phrase, and general linguistic tropes that'd get called into it.

No. They’re probably doing machine learning for this. There’s no list of ‘this phrase makes a tweet Badthink.’

Instead they gather up a bunch of tweets, label them badthink and goodthink, and feed them all into an algorithm. It (huge simplification incoming, data scientists please don’t hurt me) looks for common features of bad tweets and good tweets, and for obvious differences between the groups. Then it remembers that stuff.

When you give it a new tweet, it runs down the list of features and if it has too much in common with a bad tweet and not enough with a good tweet, it gives you the naughty flag.

(An interesting side effect of this is that since the algorithm doesn’t know anything besides the raw stream of data you feed it—it has no concept of a word, for example—it’s a strictly mathematical process. When I say ‘feature’ above, I don’t mean ‘it has the word bitch in it.’ A feature can be anything in the data. If a lot of bad tweets happen between 5 and 6 PM on Tuesdays, that gets recognized as a feature and any tweets in that window will look suspicious. If some random coincidence means that goodthink tweets tend to have the letter j exactly 17 letters after the letter p, anything in the future that meets that criterion will make the model a little happy. It’s amazing that it works at all, let alone that it’s generally so effective when you do it right.)

It would be hilarious if someone creates a Twitter Bot that takes Misandric tweets and re-tweets them back by changing "Men" to "Jew" like r/menkampf. So technically, if the tweet is offensive Twitter has no choice but to take down the original tweet.

The kids at 4chan are just going to find a way to screw with it. I remember a few years back Microsoft created a Twitter bot named Tay and within a few hours, the 4chan trolls turned her into a trash-talking, racist, sexist, sexually-explicit neo-Nazi before Microsoft pulled the plug.

I wonder if it could identify a Tweet like “Kill all men” as offensive or are they just focussed on trying to constantly prove women are victims despite obvious, widespread and outright hatred of men?

let me guess anything thats not licking the boots of women will be labelled as such?

[–]LegendaryEmu11 point 5 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Didn't they already do this for racist stuff and found minorities were way more racist?

And didn't they do it for the word 'slut' and found women used it way way more than men?

I guess its round 3 of trying to make everything white men's fault?

In Australia, scientists at the Queensland University of Technology...

God dammit my country, why!?

The team hopes social media platforms could adopt the technology.

From one million, there then remained 5,000 tweets.

According to the team, their system can identify misogyny in tweets with an accuracy level as high as 75%.

...Please no, and thats not very much, roughly 0.005% of tweets mention that...out of a million. Doesn't sound like much of a problem, and definitely not one you need an AI that won't function to work on.

But 75% is really really shit. To begin with, what constitutes misogyny? Today, telling a woman to fuck off, could be considered misogyny. Its THEIR definition of misogyny and its probably horribly inaccurate.

“At the moment, the onus is on the user to report abuse they receive. We hope our machine-learning solution can be adopted by social media platforms to automatically identify and report this content to protect women and other user groups online,”

...Oh no...personal responsibility, how scary. How would this help? Does the youtube algorithm function properly, something that has been worked on for years by one of the most profitable companies in the world?

No, no it does not. This would definitely cause more problems than fix, for sure. One thing no AI can do is tell what is satire and what is not.

Why this is being funded is beyond me.

Doesn’t sound like much of a problem...

It’s not, but that doesn’t matter. The cost/benefit to do this is infinitesimal. The tools to do this are free and run suitably quickly on consumer level hardware. It’s the kind of exercise you can do in your second or third semester at some universities. There are people who do it that aren’t out of high school. From a corporate spending point of view, this project is free.

But selling it as a service to Twitter for a hundred million dollars (I didn’t check the numbers, if they’re even public, but I’ve seen stupider stuff sell for more...) and the company reputation of ‘the official internet white knights’ brining in other customers who want to stop those ebil bad misogynists? I’m almost sorry I didn’t think of this swindle myself.

Feminists are authoritarian. No doubt.

And for that reason EVERY intelligent tweet will be flagged...
