Really?

Groth’s comments come after a controversy over frosh chants that glorify non-consensual sex—or rape—of young women at two Canadian schools this year.

Even ignoring the characterisation of those chants as 'glorifying' rape (which is tendentious at best considering 'g' stood for 'go to jail', a fact no one ever mentions), what does this have to do with Miles Groth? His comments weren't about those chants.

One could just as easily have written:

Groth’s comments come after a the tragedy of the suicide of Earl Silverman, a man who struggled in vain to get the Canadian Government to fund men's shelters.

That's just as relevant a fact, isn't it? Doesn't it point to the things Groth is talking about in terms of public services in Canada being geared towards women?

I think we can agree that either of these facts just dropped in using the weasel phrase 'Groth's comments come after...' would be indicative of bias. I don't know if I'd call it a 'hit piece', but balanced it most certainly was not.

Ending chants has nothing to do with "sexual assault reduction".

chants that celebrate raping underage women have everything to do with rape culture, and by extension the normalization of sexual assault.

In fact nothing done in the name of campus "sexual assault awareness" will do anything to prevent sexual assault. (It may, in fact, increase it.)

how you think? teaching young men that pickup culture is a cult of date rape doesn't strike me as something that would increase sexual assault rates. if your argument is that reporting would increase, well yeah that's the point. a successful sexual assault reduction campaign would see a dramatic increase in reported sexual assault (as more people would better understand when they've been assaulted and what they can do about it), and then slowly as the campaign went on and as more and more people grew to understand and respect consent, that initial spike would glide downward. if your argument is that learning about consent makes people rapists, you've hit a new low from the manhood=slavery thing.

Ending sexual assault is beyond a university administration's mandate and they don't have the facilities

i agree to an extent. sexual assault, like other elements of toxic masculinity, are becoming the norm. some parts of hookup culture have sexual assault built in nowadays. that being said, the university has an obligation to reduce as much harm as possible. one prevented assault makes this entire thing worthwhile. the kids are at orientation anyways, why not take some of that time to teach them how easy it is to slip up and assault someone when you don't know what consent is or how it works.

the necessary skills

at least in canadian universities, sexual assault prevention is performed by public health officials who do have the skills.

or the lack of ideological bias to do it.

what ideological bias? hating sexual assault? treasuring consent? or do you mean not buying into MRA falsehoods?

This is likely a futile endeavour but from this I gather that you think sexual assault is an element of male culture, correct?

not really. maybe i should have been more specific.

do i think college age sexual assault is generally a male activity? yes.

at this point, due to a complex mesh of reasons (underfunded public health, pop-culture, not having well placed feminists in public health/education/government, etc.), sexual assault as courtship is becoming the norm with young people. people go to parties and prey on intoxicated people who can't give ironclad consent. social myths like "she wouldn't dress/dance/talk/flirt/be here that way if she wasn't looking to hook up" run unchecked through young culture that permit the predation of young women. because culture generally expects men to be the sexual aggressor (another symptom of toxic masculinity), this leads to widespread sexual assault against women perpetrated by young men.

this is the kind of college age sexual assault university orientations are attempting to curb. i agree in principle that a university can't necessarily stop violent stranger rape or sway a would be predator through an orientation lesson, but we're in a culture that refuses to see its standard operating procedure as lacking consent and manufacturing date rape. i'd wager that a lot of these kids think what they're doing isn't rape.

How does that explain female rapists?

it doesn't explicitly in the same way it doesn't explicitly explain violent sexual predators that know what consent is and know why they don't want it. listen, i know better than most that women are capable of sexual assault and that men can be victims. i'm not one of your straw feminists. i also know that any public health official knows the same and incorporates that into any harm reduction presentation. i also know that despite the MRM's selective reading of stats, i'm in a stark minority. from a harm reduction standpoint, that being reduce the greatest amount of harm with available resources, more attention should be paid to why men confuse predatory behaviour with manhood.
