It was the last opening day of the old Yankee stadium. I took the subway to the game and, as usual, brought my bag along. It's not a tiny bag, but by no means it is large, certainly not larger than a good percentage of purses.

Going through the turn style, I was told I couldn't bring the bag into the game and would have to throw it out. I questioned why, and they said it was a policy. As I was standing there talking to him about it, while he let no fewer than 3 women pass by with bigger bags than I had. I pointed this out, and also pointed out all the women beyond gate who had as big or bigger bags than I. He was unmoved.

So I said fine, went through the gate to where you are supposed to throw the bags out, checked back and saw the guy not looking, and then just walked by. I had only made it a few steps when the guy basically jumped me and dragged me back to the gate, kicking me out. I just yelled to my wife to enjoy the game as she was saying she would just leave too. The guy eventually relented and let me in, but made sure I threw out the bag.

Every time I saw a woman in that game with a bag bigger than mine, which was plenty, it was just salt in the wound.

Yeah I think this policy is kind of ridiculous. Doesn't the store just assume by default then, that you are a criminal and will try to steal something at any chance you get? I would not be comfortable doing business with somebody who doesn't trust me at all.

I guess it might depend on the kind of neighborhood, in some countries I have even seen liquor stores that are basically a shack and only interact with customers through a trap door or a slide...

Still, if a store would ask me to leave my bag at the front desk I would either do as you did or just leave the store and tell them that they apparently do not need my business. Either way it is unacceptable.

Especially since I know a lot of women who have smuggled things in their purses far more often than guys tried to smuggle anything in any way... Come to think of it... do they not have surveillance cameras if they are worried about stealing?

I've come across this as well. I wonder if there is data to show that men do more shoplifting than women?

I have never seen any footage of a woman holding up a liquor store, Although Im sure there are instances. Women get their guys to hold up the liquor store for them so they get a share of the dough without the risk or resposiblity. Ring any bells? Probably wise to check the guys in the store .....
