A while ago, I was at a social gathering, where one of the female guests, started talking about the objectification of women. In times past, when women have talked about feminist issues in public, I've usually kept quiet. This time i was having none of it.
I responded by pointing out to her, that while some women don't want to be looked at, others do. And to back up my response, I pointed out the millions of women posting their pictures on social media, not to mention the narcissists I have known in various community projects, who clearly do want attention.
The rest of the guests at the table, fell silent and sat awkwardly listening to our verbal sparring. Most people like to avoid these kind of conversations. But then they say that we should have difficult discussions about the major issues. So let s do that.
If we just nod our heads and say yeah, whenever someone decides to say 'men this, women that', we are letting the other side dictate social norms for us. What starts as woke feminist ideology, can become policy if enough people believe it. Take the proposed 'man tax' that was tried in Scandanavia some years ago. Or the cafe in Australia, where the owners decided to charge male customers more, to 'compensate' for the so called 'gender pay gap' (which by the way has been debunked numerous times). The extreme can become normalised, but only if we let it.
So here s what we should do. Every time you hear a generalisation made about men, at a social gathering, politely reply that there is another side to the argument. Don't shout or use curse words. Just point out the facts. The feminist making the statement may dismiss your argument out of hand or even call you a mysogynist but if she s the one who has to resort to insults then you ve already won.
Speaking up is never easy - I ll admit men are usually more stoic and reserved, there I said it - but we need to challenge the Modern Feminists (ie misandrists) way of thinking and policies, by telling our side of the story, firmly but respectfully. By challenging their words and policies, we can show the world that there is another side to the gender discourse.
That s how we win.
