Lol, they literally walk around with laser swords, how are they going to avoid violence?

Meanwhile...

This stupidity limits the roles available to women in films. I'm sure the very same protagonists complain about that too.

This post gives too much attention to a doofus ignore them.

It's "extremely upsetting" to be asked your opinion?

"Thinking is hard"...is that the message she's putting out there?

Eh, this is kinda silly. It's her work, she can do what she wants with it and you don't have to read it.

[–]Wargame4life 14 points15 points16 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

the same is true of his comments

[–]throwthetrash15 -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I think it's a good criticism, but the author of the material has every right to only feature violence against men, just as you can write fanfiction with violence only towards women, or all inclusive violence, or no violence at all. The fact that this sub downvoted me is odd, because I thought we were against the authoritarian approaches to art oh so prevalent in feminism.

[–]RockFourFour 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don't think anyone is saying that she shouldn't be able to do it. They're pointing out that she's ok with violence against men, but not women. And she seems to get really butthurt when people point it out to her.

[–]Landjo -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think the comment was a bit silly, though. The systemic nature and gender roles behind it are obvious, even to feminists and the general public. And how does he expect someone like that to react? Plus this is the kind of stuff that, coupled with the right underlying assumptions, lend credence to ridiculous but tempting portrayals of MRAs as misogynists. Edit out some of the context, add some commentary, and voila, yet another MRA insisting that it is his right to kill women and a woman, laudable for the bravery she needs to gain a place in the cesspool of male privilege that is the gaming sector, pleading that he understands that killing hordes of women is a bit upsetting and would he please stop insisting on it?

[–]Luchadorgreen 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Because it would be like as if I said, "If you think this thread is silly, you don't have to comment." It's a pointless thing to say.

[–]throwthetrash15 -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Not really. She has every right to do this, it's usually feminists that are authoritarian and try to control art.

[–]Luchadorgreen 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

And yet readers have every right to criticize it. Everyone knows this, and that's why what you said was pointless.

[–]throwthetrash15 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I know readers are allowed to criticise. I just think our time is worthlessly spent on this. This person wont change and they have every right to make their comics, and I support them. I don't think any form of art should be changed or censored by the public's pressure.

Fascinating. I used to think that the assumption that men oppress women through patriarchy was what poisoned feminism, a movement with laudable intentions that I fully agree with in theory. It is the oppressed status of women that makes them able to ignore men's problems, justify or even celebrate female violence, and in fact defend rather than oppose gender roles.

But that is perhaps changing. The focus is more on the notion that the personal is political, that subjective perception should assume an arbitrating role. Whereas ten year's ago, she might have said that structural inequalities justify specific restrictions against killing her female character, now the only analysis necessary is that it upsets her.

Which is, of course, the same approach that made women's potential offense the guiding principle for strict societal rules of engagement in, say, Victorian high society. A notion firmly ensconced in our gender roles, formed during the 99% of human history where failing to protect women and children above all was not only a lofty principle, but probably subject to natural selection: any tribe failing to do so would - try some simple arithmetic - face swift extinction in a society with an average life span of 35 and no medical care to speak of.

Which is why I think that the men's rights movement should claim the championship of an effort to remove the constraints of gender roles. There should be no contradiction between recognising men's contributions, encouraging men and women to try out non-traditional roles, and stopping letting gender influence whom we protect and encourage. If anything systemic is holding women back, it is exactly the victim gender role feminism is fighting so hard to retain: perhaps in the innocuous shape of a childhood full of excessive pity, compassion, and positive messaging, and very few reprimands; then entering professional life convinced systemic sexism is everywhere and interpreting any adversity from that perspective. Benevolence will serve them well in the first parts of their career, but when their company has to trust them to represent the company, guide staff, carry the responsibility for hundreds of millions of dollars, and travel the world, all else being equal, her male colleague may simply be the safer option.
