The pardon now paves the way for Mr Sharpe to pursue compensation of up to $750,000 from the state for his wrongful conviction.

Compensation is grossly inadequate in my book, not to mention $750,000 is the upper limit and he most likely will not be getting even that.

The girl admitted at Mr Sharpe’s trial that she had been paid $500 to come forward.

Yeah, this shitshow has public defender written all over.

Just two months after the trial, the witness admitted she had lied in court and wasn’t actually present at the time of the shooting.

Surely he was promptly released?

Mr Sharpe always maintained his innocence and fought against his conviction for 24 years before he was finally exonerated and released from prison in 2019.

His release came after a judge ruled that the witness’s testimony was “entirely made up” and after the medical examiner who had testified at the trial said the shooting was “medically and scientifically impossible”.

So not as much him being released instantly, as the state taking 24 fucking years to do their god damn job...

The original prosecutor should serve out the rest of Mr Sharpes term, and then some. This is a god damn travesty...

The judge ordered Mr Sharpe’s release from prison and granted his motion for a new trial.

The same day, the district attorney’s office dismissed the murder charge against him and said the state wouldn’t pursue a retrial.

Good on the current DA, but the government locked him away for a quarter of a century based on evidence that within weeks of the sentence was proven to be physically impossible, with it hinging on a paid prosecutorial witness who admitted to lying, and it would still take an additional 24 years..

The woman who lied need to go to jail, the original prosecutor needs to go to jail. The judge need to be disbarred for not calling for the case to be revisited. They all directly contributed to his false imprisonment...

It's a nationwide problem though, one preferably EVERY American stood up against. Witness manipulation, jailhouse informants-a terrifying absurd number of trials for different kinds of people across the US rest entirely on the words of a single person and no other evidence, even though its been shown to be highly ineffective and prone to manipulation and coercion.

To be honest, absolutely any crime, regardless or its severity, shouldn't be pursued if all they have is witness testimony. Anyone in prison on purely witness testimony should get a new trial, I say.
