The problem with feminism is they almost always start to get something right and then veer off into la-la land. The reason people identify with them is because of this original seed of truth the reason a great deal eventually are disillusioned is because of how those seeds of truth are relentlessly manipulated and twisted.

The quintessential example being the oppression of women.

Its very hard to argue that the traditional role of women wasn't oppressive, as in if a women didn't want to be in that role they were still by and large forced to do so by circumstance. However, Feminism takes this idea and does two intellectually dishonest things. First, It completely ignores that this applies to men's traditional gender roles. Second, Feminism seeing oppression assumes a knowledgeable and active oppressor.

The reality is that traditional gender roles were oppressive to those who did not fit within those roles. Gender roles while being oppressive to a large minority (if not more), were not designed by any specific person or group of people, they arose naturally and uniformly in almost all human societies. Yes men do at times enforce female gender roles but women also enforce male gender roles and both enforce their own gender roles. None of the above should be conflated with class oppression, that at times can be show to be both active and intentional.

So what if Feminism had actually been about equality from the beginning?

To start off it wouldn't be named Feminism. You wouldn't name a movement about eating all food vegetarianism. In the same vein if Feminism was about equality it would be named something like Egalitarianism.

Obviously from above the whole notion of "Patriarchy Theory" would not exist. What might replace it would be the notion that, "Traditional gender roles can be oppressive to anyone." In addition this hypothetical movement might work towards making gender roles inclusive of non normative behavior. The reason you wouldn't try to eliminate gender roles entirely is because some people fit into them and eliminating them is oppressive to those that do.

The best example being women who want to be stay at home mothers and how, in general, the feminist movement has demonized these women.

In the case of "Rape Culture" this hypothetical movement would never demonize people based on their gender. Likely such a movement would be focusing on societal acceptance of safe sex as a natural human activity. Removing the negative associations of sex and the mentality that rape is worse than death would reduce a great deal of trauma that rape victims face. This would make it easier for rape victims to report rape and equally make it less stigmatizing to be falsely accused.

Such a movement would want to educate all people that consent is a two way street and just as a woman can choose to say no, men can and should if they do not wish to have sex. It would want to educate the public that arousal and desire don't mean consent, just because you can get someone "hot and bothered" doesn't mean they are "asking for it" for either sex.

Finally such a movement would be advocating for justice not vengeance when it comes to rape.

But the above as nice as it sounds isn't Feminism, it never has been, and sadly most likely never will be.
