I think a lot of women are afraid of validating the experience for a man because they're worried it will invalidate their's; to give it any traction is to say that the instances are equal, and often-times they are very different. Does that mean you shouldn't be upset by it? No, of course not. The women who cat-called you were out of line and you had every right to be angry. I think, however, that many people struggle with understanding that just because things are different, it doesn't necessarily mean they aren't equal... so they minimize it.
