Hey everyone, I just spoke to a family law attorney today about getting 50/50 custody of my 2 children. I currently have every other weekend and rotating holidays. My child support obligation is roughly 800/mo, and it was calculated about 2 years ago when I made 18/hr. I now make 27/hr, while the mother of my kids is remarried and sits at home with my 2 kids, and their two kids as well.

When I was speaking to my attorney, he said that with my new wage, even if we were to have joint custody, my child support obligation would be roughly the same, because her income is calculated at roughly minimum wage (since she doesn’t have a job) and my wage is significantly higher.

Her husband clears 100k annually, plus my child support, and they have been living in the lap of luxury. Renting new house after new house and moving towns every 6 months to a year, while I have been living in a crappy 3 bedroom apartment in a ghetto part of my city. I don’t even have a bath fan to ventilate the bathroom.

I feel that with 50/50 custody, especially where she is privileged enough to not work because of her husbands salary, I shouldn’t have to pay any child support. I feel that with 50/50, I should be given the same opportunity grow and create a similar lifestyle for the kids while they are with me. I know that with no child support obligation, I could finally purchase a permanent home for myself and the kids, and add stability to their chaotic life.

I’m mostly posting this in hopes people have my back, but I am open to all feedback and advice. TIA!
