I don't buy that women only associate with men for their own benefit more than men do in reverse, nor do Briffault's views on what primitive societies were like go unchallenged, but I do think it's true that females controlled the production and care of children in primitive societies, particularly once natural abortifacients became more widely used.

That said, I always found it funny how TRP got 'only men are capable of sacrificial love' from 'men are by nature absent fathers and in primitive times rarely committed long-term to their sexual partners.' If I believed in Briffault's law in the context of his other writings, it would suggest to me that all human interaction is based on mutual benefit with women having the edge on controlling reproduction due to having the wombs, not that men are capable of sacrificial love in a way woman aren't. If anything, belief in it would suggest that human nature would be best served in a societal structure similar to what bonobos operate under than what we have now.
