The central argument of this essay is the idea that perhaps one of the most important causes of Rome’s decline was structural economic weakness inherent within the empire long before the third century AD. These weaknesses include things like the inherent problems of a slave-economy, decentralisation of industry/agriculture, and the long-term non-sustainability and ‘top-heaviness’ of the Empire. However, this is not to suggest that there were not other important factors at play other than economic ones. Things like the increasing ‘barbarization’ of the military and the political classes, intellectual and ‘spiritual’ decline and the increasing pressure on Rome’s borders could also be cited as important. The decline of Rome should be seen as part of a complex process without a single, concise explanation. The decline of Rome was the result of a complex process of interwoven weaknesses, defects and contingencies.

A decline in morals, especially in the rich upper classes and the emperors, had a devastating impact on the Romans. Immoral and promiscuous sexual behaviour including adultery and orgies. Emperors such as Tiberius kept groups of young boys for his pleasure, incest by Nero who also had a male slave castrated so he could take him as his wife, Elagabalus who forces a Vestal Virgin into marriage, Commodus with his harems of concubines who enraged Romans by sitting in the theatre dressed in a woman's garments. The decline in morals also effected the lower classes and slaves. Religious festivals such as Saturnalia and Bacchanalia where sacrifices, ribald songs, lewd acts and sexual promiscuity were practised. Bestiality and other lewd and sexually explicit acts were exhibited in the Colosseum arena to amuse the mob. Brothels and forced prostitution flourished. Widespread gambling on the chariot races and gladiatorial combats. Massive consumption of alcohol. The sadistic cruelty towards both man and beasts in the arena.

Life became cheap - bloodshed led to more bloodshed and extreme cruelty. The values, the ideals, customs, traditions and institutions, of the Romans declined. The basic principles, standards and judgments about what was valuable or important in life also declined. The total disregard for human and animal life resulted in a lack of ethics - a perverted view of what was right and wrong, good and bad, desirable and undesirable. Any conformity to acceptable rules or standards of human behaviour were being lost.

As Christianity advances, disasters befall the [Roman] empire—arts, science, literature, decay—barbarism and all its revolting concomitants are made to seem the consequences of its decisive triumph—and the unwary reader is conducted, with matchless dexterity, to the desired conclusion—the abominable Manicheism of Candide, and, in fact, of all the productions of Voltaire's historic school—viz., "that instead of being a merciful, ameliorating, and benignant visitation, the religion of Christians would rather seem to be a scourge sent on man by the author of all evil."

Why did they have to use foreign mercenaries latter in their empire?

Ah, now this is interesting.

I assume you are talking about the barbarian troops that increasingly made up first the auxilleries and then the legions through the 2nd and 3rd centuries.

I am interested in why you think these were mercenaries. They were typically barbarian borns who were offered land and citizenship to fight for Rome. There is a specialized term for these men Foederati. I'm sure there is a wiki page somewhere. basically, when you became a client state of rome during the late period... Very often a large part of your tribute to rome was paid in the form of Foederati. But these aren't mercs, they are free-born barbarians being offered the chance to be free-born romans for the price of military service.

A bit like those Non-American servicemen the US army enlists today.

I'm not actually aware of much mercenary usage in Rome, particularly in the late period, just because Rome was famously cash-strapped during that period.

That was the advantage of the barbarians. They were cheap. A few rights and privileges. A bit of land. Half the pay of Roman Citizens.

Why didn't Rome rely on these types of soldiers when it was at its Peak in power?

Because it could afford to pay the roman citizens to do it back then... And because at that point they were trying to kill the barbarians rather than creating client states and doing tribute deals.

There was also the issue that the citizen armies tended to get a bit too loyal to their general and end up making him emperor.... A consideration later emperors took very seriously when raising a new citizen army.

There is also the fact that in (say) 1 AD Roman Military Organization, Tactics and Tools were world beaters...... and by 400 AD the very, very, very similar Military Organization, Tactics and Tools had long been surpassed.

Rome was built around it's infantry. They never really developed good cavalry of their own. They were an infantry force.

This became highly problematic with the invention of the stirrup and cavalry charge.

Luckily, there were all these barbarians who knew how to do that... And as their king owed Rome some tribute ? Why not take that tribute in the form of cavalry forces ?

Are you denying the Barbarians serving in large numbers caused them to learn Roman tactics and defeat them?

Yes. That wasn't the problem.

The problem was that Rome could no longer pay to keep an army. (the economics issues we alluded to).

When it did get an army together, it invariably fought the other half of the roman army in order to make it's guy emperor. Leaving the victor in charge of the tattered remnants of the Imperial Roman Army.

And then the remnants were outnumbered 2:1 by the invading barbarians who had invented things like Horse Archery, Cavalry Charges and Combined Arms Warfare that beat the (by now very outdated) Roman Military system into a cocked hat.

But... You know... Clearly the feminists caused it. That was the original point, right ?

So... Please explain to me your rationale as to why "Roman Feminism" made the legions weak.
