Chivalry is dead. So when did it die within you?

Back when I was in high school, I was at a party and one dude's girlfriend started flirting and making out with someone else while he wasn't there atm. He came by about 90 minutes later and one of his friends must have told them because he dragged her out back and the two had a pretty loud row and her shrill screams.

After smashing noises started, some of us went to investigate and my friend tried to break the two up acting as peacemaker and ended up hitting the guy with a punch or two. Next thing I know, she's jumped my friend and was biting his scalp and I had to drag her off him. Shit got heated and we left. He ended up needed several stitches and weeks afterwards was joking it was the worst hickey he ever got.

I had, other, more serious encounters with (not nuclear or immediate) family members doing the same thing, where the perps were seemingly even distributed amongst gender lines, and the feeling being there is much heavier and awkward, especially when you're just a kid.

Luckily I never invited any of that drama in my personal life, I know some friends that get off on arguing or fighting with their partners and then get hot'n'heavy with them later, but someone tries that with me, I just give them the boot permanently.

Anyway, that and shit I seen in bars pretty much reinforced the bystander effect in me for any battling couples. I've heard neighbors fight like mad and then go silent, or women (probably prostitutes) getting beaten on trains or in back streets, used to shrug, and now just laugh. It's probably wrong, but it's hard to care at the point I'm at. I rarely ever seen an interloper treated well by either party and have seen a resulting stabbing.

Anyway, it's one of those weird quirks of biology where you're naturally inclined to want to help and subsequently trained to stay the fuck away because nothing ever good comes of it.
