And yet, previous generations of readers were perfectly willing to buy comics about Storm, Phoenix, Rogue, X-23, and the other three dozen female X-Men who are actually entertaining characters and not written solely to pander to a vocal minority.

Wonder why?

[–]Nevera_ 41 points42 points43 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Something about pandering, lawsuits, and a bunch of kitty baby whiners.

[–]PitaSteve 10 points11 points12 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

WKBW lol

[–]Nevera_ 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

WIMPY KITTY BABY WHINERS!!! Thats what THAT stands for!!

[–]WARLORD_MWO 13 points14 points15 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I wish I could give you 1000 upvotes...and those were powerful women HEROINE's...Storm was one of the leading members of X-Men...oops...maybe they'll change it to X-People now....

[–]Argonometra 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Actually, the word 'man' is partially derived from a gender-neutral word. Latin and German had the same word but different definitions, and since those two languages were what combined to form English, one definition had to go so the word could be used effectively.

It's just the way the cookie crumbled. You can't have a word with contradictory meanings (both 'male' and 'male and female'). It's unfortunate that the German definition for mann took precedence, but sexism was not necessarily why it did. Maybe there were more German speakers around at the time. Maybe people didn't care about whether the word was literal or not. Maybe mann was easier to say than human, even if the latter was objectively more correct/useful/PC.

[–]Random_Link_Roulette 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Wait... I just realized that, we are by far mostly a Germanic language right? But we have Latin rooted words? So what is the 3rd? is it true it has 3 roots?

[–]Random_Link_Roulette 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I fucking loved old-school Rogue, such a bamf.. would loser powers and life to bang/10

Diversity isnt killing their sales, Force Diversity is. Two different things. They should of Listen to Stan Lee and not the SJW of the world.

http://theralphretort.com/stan-lee-tells-the-sjws-to-make-their-own-characters-they-cry-in-response-6025015/

[–]defund_pph 50 points51 points52 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

A couple days back, Stan Lee, the legendary creator of Spider-Man, Thor, Iron Man, The X-Men, etc, etc, came out and said that he thinks SJWs who have tried to inject their ideology onto established heroes should go and create their own characters instead of co-opting old ones.

If every developer or writer followed this logic for their media, it wouldnt be in the sorry state that its in.

[–]rg90184 13 points14 points15 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Stan the man Lee is a godsend to us all.

EXCELSIOR!!

[–]LedZeppelin1602 11 points12 points13 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

I find it insulting that characters started by white guy's as white characters have to all change so people of colour and so forth am have an easier way in to representation than them creating their own comic companies and characters from scratch.

It's the easy route of piggybacking on others success than the hard effort of starting from the bottom and making the new character popular.

[–]MegaRock87 21 points22 points23 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Forced diversity and shitty writing.

[–]ShitArchonXPR 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This. It's not that there's diversity or female leads, it's that the characters and writing are bad. Nobody likes bad characters and bad writing.

It's exactly like when Sony blamed the unpopularity of the Ghostbusters trailer on "viewers are misogynist"--to the point of deleting thoughtful critiques in the comments section so they could just point to the most inflammatory ones and say "see? It's not because this is a bad movie, it's because they hate strong female leads!"--when being a strong female lead who is neither arm candy nor a sex object didn't hinder the popularity of Ripley in Alien made decades ago when gender inequality was much greater.

[–]AssAssIn46 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

DAE WE SHOULD TURN WHITE CHARACTER INTO AN ASIAN BECAUSE HE DOES KUNG FU? KUNG FU = ASIAN, RIGHT? YOU'RE SO RACIST AND I'M NOT, I'M A GOOD PERSON.

If anyone is confused, this is about the whole Iron Fist shitfest.

[–]Kevinorhighwater 12 points13 points14 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

UGGGHHH... this so much.

"Why does every asian character have to have a sword and be good at martial arts smh"

5 mins later

"UMMMM... why is a WHITE guy doing clearly asian martial arts???"

[–]Turpen_the_savior 30 points31 points32 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

People don't like when you try to fix stuff that isn't broken. It just ends up making it worse.

[–]Barsik_The_CaT 18 points19 points20 points 9 years ago* (6 children) | Copy Link

Well, they're partially right - diversity IS hurting their sales. But that's no wonder. You can't relaunch a whole universe just to give characters different races and sexual orientations just so it looks more politically correct. The comic books were always about better people, heroes, people you'd want to look up to whether you are 5, 15 or 25. But Marvel just gives us a character that is not interesting, but instead just homosexual/colored/something-something-gender.

[–]Kevinorhighwater 11 points12 points13 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

that and the dialogue is just so obviously geared towards pushing social attitudes. not that there's anything wrong with having a female overcome sexism and dealing with gender specific issues (jessica jones), but it's just incredibly clunky and piss-poor writing if every thug the female hero encounters is like "HEHEH HUEHHUEH HEH yerr a LAYYDY, watcha gonna do, PAINT MY NAILS to death?? HEHHEH HUEH HUEH HEH" and then she's like "Oh you're gonna be ESPECIALLY fun to beat up, let me teach you a thing or two about GIRL POWER!!!"

they just read more like cheap teenage fan fiction, which there's nothing wrong with. but dont expect cheap teenage fan fiction to sell as much as the last installment of Xmen

[–]philthepile 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I feel like I just read every movie script of the last 5 years condensed into a tiny fragment of dialogue.

[–]DakotaTheDawg 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Nah it's literally Spider-Man's fault.

I use to buy comics from marvel weekly! Loved doing it, then One More Day happened.

Fuck you, Marvel, never again.

[–]Barsik_The_CaT 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I am not into comics honestly (too expensive/hard to get when I was a kid, now it's still kinda expensive and there're other things to spend money on), so I'm only familiar with Marvel from those old cartoons that were aired in 19xx-200x. Wasn't Spidy meant to be Avengers' leader or something? Like, the kind of guy, who's a hero, but the hero that's closer to streets (like DC's Batman)?

[–]DakotaTheDawg 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Spider-Man has been meant to be a lot of things, but Marvel usually decides the best course of action is to have him and his girlfriend break up, maybe he'll lose his minimum wage job.

They're all about quality writing.

[–]Eab543 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Cough or 30 cough!

[–]Valac_I whiteKnight for fatties 12 points13 points14 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I'm honestly sick of forced diversity.

Its literally the same as being racist or sexist you're forcing a character to be something they aren't. Superman is a straight white guy he doesn't need to be a black transsexual gender fluid queer just because it'll make a few loud annoying people "happy".
I'm just done with it as a society we need to move on from thinking about what race people are period. It really doesn't fucking matter if all the super hero's are white. They aren't real people anyway.

[–]Juswantedtono 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

If race doesn't matter why does it matter so much to you if they make Superman black or Asian?

[–]Valac_I whiteKnight for fatties 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

If they made superman right now and he was black or Asian it wouldn't matter. If they made a movie and a black or Asian actor really played a good superman it wouldn't matter.

It matters because they're forcing changes where they aren't necessary. Super man is a white guy always been a white guy I see no valid reason to make him anything else. He's a character someone envisioned him to look a certain way act a certain way have certain motivations. Changing those for the sake of "diversity" is stupid. Like Stan Lee said just make a new character it's easy.

[–]Juswantedtono 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Superman's character, appearance, motivations, and lore has been changed hundreds of times throughout various comics, movies, TV shows, video games, etc. I presume you're okay with those changes. Why not a change in his skin color? If race doesn't matter why is that change so offensive to you?

[–]Valac_I whiteKnight for fatties 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They really haven't they've been altered not flat out changed. Change isn't offensive there's just no reason for it I can see nothing that would be added by making superman black.

So again we're back to what I actually said which is forced diversity is shit.

[–]everycommieshoulddie 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If we somehow stop thinking of race (impossible), that will just move the parameters of how we visually identify people to something more specific and silly. The human brain naturally categorizes.

The answer is that every race has a right to be proud and to pursue their own self-interest, including white people.

[–]Valac_I whiteKnight for fatties 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's absurd we absolutely can we segregate ourselves for no reason we are a species we're all exactly the same species.

[–]samsc2Cooking up a batch of MRE denials 20 points21 points22 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

No one likes it when you take a previously loved character and decide to just say fuck you to all the fans and replace it with a bullshit pandering diversity requirement concept. Especially thor. That's his name it's not a title holy shit. And that whole cancer thing....really? like really? who decided to come up with the dumbest fucking thing ever like saying that she's "cured" of her chemo therapy every time she becomes vaginathor but it magically leaves her cancer in her, and she's also such a douche that she doesn't want the cancer cured by the countless people that told her they can cure her of it. Like wtf? She just wants sympathy or something? She likes the bald head? wtf?

[–]Mcsmack 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm actually liking Jane Foster Thor quite a bit. Shit is actually pretty well written. She's got an interesting take on things. And I like that she's catching hell in Asgard for 'stealing' the hammer.

Plus Unworthy Thor has gotten kind of cool.

[–]samsc2Cooking up a batch of MRE denials 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They could have done the entire unworthy thor thing without stealing his name away for pandering PC bullshit. It's not exactly the first time he's lost his hammer. He was that doctor for a while with the stick that he could slam on the ground to turn into regular thor form. The concept of the hammer's history is kinda neat but it's just buried under mountains of dumb.

[–]StrongblackfemaleI only film vertically 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yet here he blames retailers, and not the publishers. He's still living in the sjw echo chamber.

[–]shdhfsnbdjdndb 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Reminds me of ghostbusters. I was so disgusted to see them try to force things to work. Stan Lee is right. Create new characters! Then everyone wins

[–]FuncuzCapt-Save-A-Ho 13 points14 points15 points 9 years ago (31 children) | Copy Link

I've never in my entire life seen a female reading a comic book. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, I'm just saying I've never seen it. Or heard of it. Or heard about it from anybody in the real world.

Now, maybe I'm the odd one out here or I'm not thinking of something I should be but I've always been under the impression that comics were a boy thing. If that's true, why would putting a girl in the Iron Man suit appeal to any boy anywhere? It's not that it's a girl, it's that they'd fear she was going to be the new Iron Man and they'd see never their Iron Man again. Of course they'd reject it. You need new things that appeal to a rather youthful audience. Focusing your marketing on shit that people who don't even read comics think would make it better isn't going to improve sales. The reason is simple, actually: They just want something to complain about. They don't actually care and if you ignore them they will, in fact, go away eventually.

Were I a young boy looking to buy a comic, I wouldn't even understand the idea behind some pink haired lesbian cunt saving the world from all white corporate leadership. Explaining it to me would just bore me and since you can't really do such a thing without explaining yourself first, there's not much point in trying to sell it to me.

[–]itsjosh18 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

My sister reads comic books.

[–]DeathArrow007 10 points11 points12 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

But he didn't see her reading the comic book. So there.

[–]itsjosh18 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I haven't seen her read a comic book either...hmmm

[–]DeathArrow007 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Maybe she's not even your sister...

Perhaps she's really...

Black Superman!

[–]itsjosh18 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well she's my stepsister. And that is entirely possible.

[–]Argonometra 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Have you ever been to a comics convention?

[–]FuncuzCapt-Save-A-Ho 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Clearly not. I did say that there's quite possibly something that I'm not thinking of and maybe things have changed since I was a kid.

[–]Eab543 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I want too.

[–]Argonometra 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Cool.

[–]Eab543 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Have you? Are they fun or cramped and sweaty?

[–]Argonometra 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Fun, if loud. The amount of people doesn't make conventions cramped so much as slow. Think of traffic jams- the cars aren't touching, but there's enough of them that traffic is slow anyway. Convention crowds are like that.

sweaty

I live in urban Australia, so any convention sites I've been to are fully air-conditioned. I can't speak for other countries, though.

[–]ShitArchonXPR 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

My sister has. She's done cosplays of Kim Possible, Raven from Teen Titans, and a character from Panty and Stocking.

[–]Diablo3RuinedMe 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I read comics.

[–]FuncuzCapt-Save-A-Ho 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]Diablo3RuinedMe 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

ayuh.

[+]absolutewingedknight -6 points-5 points-4 points 9 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

But some Aryan ubermensch being a hero is something you can get behind without question. Got it.

[–]Barsik_The_CaT 11 points12 points13 points 9 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

I do sincerely hope you are trolling. Race or gender does not mean shit. But if it's being changed just to appeal some minorities with mental disorders - that is not cool.

[–]absolutewingedknight -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

What about Ghost in the Shell? Is that another case that is unpalatable to you, or is it somehow different in your eyes?

[–]Barsik_The_CaT 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

IDK, I've never watch the original series or that new movie, so I don't even know what are you talking about.

[–]Mcsmack 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

ScarJo is playing a Japanese girl in a robot body. And actually looks very similar to the original Major from the anime.

People who bitch that she should be Japanese are completely missing the point. It's like complaining that the Hobbit was racist because they didn't get a real dragon to voice Smaug.

[–]absolutewingedknight 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

According to you, what is the point? Is it a recognizable name brining more money, because that's been proven false.

[–]Mcsmack 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Ima need you rephrase that. I'm not understanding your point.

[–]absolutewingedknight -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago* (5 children) | Copy Link

You said people who bitch that the character should've been Japanese missed the point. What was the point then?

[–]Mcsmack 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link

The point was that the character's body wasn't her own. It was a construct, specifically designed in such a way as to distance the ghost from its heritage.

They hear a Japanese name and think the actor must be Japanese (or anyone of Asian descent) or else it's racism, without understanding any of the context for the choice.

Also, Johansen's wooden acting makes her perfect to play the role of a cyborg who can't express emotions. Plus, ScarJo's popularity makes her a huge box office draw.

Plus, her popularly means she'll put butts in seats, which is shortly needed in a film with this many special effects.

[–]absolutewingedknight -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

She didn't put asses in seats. The film got beat by something about a taking baby. Try again.

[–]Mcsmack1 point 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

They didn't know that at the time.

Too bad too. The movie was actually pretty good. And stayed very faithful to the original film.

[–]absolutewingedknight0 points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

If they had even one non white person under 30 in the room while making the casting decision, there have known that shit wasn't gonna fly

[–]Mcsmack2 points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Yeah, cause they're really counting on that minority - anime - fan - who - doesn't - like - ScarJo business.

I notice no one is flipping their shit over the casting of a white guy as Batou.

But, no, we should totally boycott a movie because they didn't cast an Asian actress to play a live action version of a white female robot from a twenty year old movie. /s

While I completely support the push to get more Asian actors into starring roles (because we definitely need more diversity) fighting the battle over this particular casting choice is stupid, in my opinion.

[–]ShortWarrior 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'd read that comic.

[–]FuncuzCapt-Save-A-Ho 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Fuck off.

[–]DSEthno23 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

We totally are though. What we aren't willing to buy are comics about the sane characters except gender or race swapped. I don't want a black female iron man, I want Tony Stark. Make a BRAND NEW kick ass black female character we can get behind. Etc.

[–]CuckFuckMcPuck 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Marvel: Feminism and diversity has failed us, too.

[–]tdevore 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't know if it is so much that people don't want to buy comics with these types of characters as much as what Marvel has done seems extremely forced and PC. Instead of creating new, interesting characters, they are basically making old, beloved characters into something they are not. Iron Man a young black woman. Turning Falcon into Captain America (though I think they've handled that one well). Thor is now a woman. Hulkling and Wiccan being gay (nothing wrong with that except for the fact that they can't stop talking about it). Reconning the 50 year old character Iceman as gay. Creating multi-cultural, female characters who are (in my opinion) extremely weak; I'm looking at you, Ms. America and Ms. Marvel. Making all-women teams. And lastly, making Amadeus Cho the new Hulk over the traditional Bruce Banner. It's all a lot to take over a relatively short period of time (you just messed with Captain America, Thor and Iron Man. Are you kidding?). Combine these seemingly PC changes to the fact that I think everyone is woefully exhausted by the yearly 200 issue long, universe- changing Marvel events (as well as the constant reboots and renumberings) and you get a perfect storm for declining sales. Marvel can add it's racial diversity, it can add its female characters, it can add it's gay characters. No one minds. I think most will applaud it. They just need to do it better. In the end quality is the #1 driver of sales.

PS: Dear Marvel, please stop trying to make Squirrel Girl happen. It's not gonna happen.

It's not the fact that there are females, it's the fact that there is an obvious agenda being pushed

Black Mary Jane in the new Spider-Man? No ticket being bought here.

How much outcry would there be if the Black Panther was played by a flighty, gay, white guy?

Black Mary Jane in the new Spider-Man?

That's not MJ, it's Liz Allen.

The twist is that zambomafoo or whatever the fuck is playing mj. The other black actress that they're pretending is ugly in the trailers.

It's not that people won't buy "diverse" characters. Actually, people don't care about the diversity of the characters. They care about the actual stories, and the characters/personality of the people.

If you replace good story telling and good personalities with pushing diversity based on ideology, people aren't going to like it.

Interesting character who happens to be female

Clit in a costume

Yeah I have no clue why they won't sell.

people are fine with female heroes and diversity when it is not fucking shoved down our throats...

Look at Ghostblubber, the whole premise of that remake was "we as women can do just as good if not a better job!" "Oh and if you do not like it or rate it badly then you are misogynist pieces of shit! you must like it!" It gets shoe-horned into things that really do not need it and that is what ruins it; Look at the Divergent series, it actually could have maybe been good if it was not for the SJW that shoved their ideologies down our throats with those movies... now only SJWs really like the series...

Just let the story, characters and plot be organic, let it flow and if there is a need for a transgender demi crazy loon.. then write it in; However, if you feel the story is better with all white people, all blacks or all Mexicans.. then make sure the story fits that.. don't build a story and a world for straight white male heroes then force every hero to be black-demi-god-flux-ctan-transtrender shit and write it in that they have to defend who they are every episode... that is the shit we don't wanna see...

Jessica Jones was pretty good.

Because that's not diversity. She's a woman who is also a super hero. Diversity in this case pretty much means forced diversity which is the problem. Making adaptations of old characters another race or gender pisses fans off. When people want to see their favourite superheros in live action it means they want to see their favourite superheros in live action, not someone who doesn't look anything like them. Imagine if superman was a scrawny 5"6' kid rather than what he actually looks like, it'd piss fans off because that's not who superman is. That's the same as making him a woman, black or brown. If you think that's racist then you're out of your goddamn mind. The same way, a white Luke Cage would be even stupider and a male "scarlet witch" too. If you want to have diversity then write new characters, don't make your characters straight/gay, male/female, black/brown for the sake of it, make it because either you want to because that's what you imagine the character to look like or it's helpful for the story.

Do the same group of people throw tantrums when they see white actors play brown characters? A recent example being ,"Gods of Egypt."

[–]tosseroffer67 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You know that Gods of Egypt was a huge flop, right?

There's a difference between a one-time movie event and an ongoing universe with multiple products in play and a continuous pile of arcs. With the former, you can vote with your wallet or your feet one time, and there's no need to blow your gasket. "Not going to the movie" is your protest.

With an ongoing continuum, you either protest or the issues continue. Ergo, people are complaining.

personally i didnt like the avengers political stance last election, i wont pay money to support them after that, marvel should consider this as a reason too, something no one wants to talk about.

Personally I think kamala khan ms marvel is awesome and a great character.

I know firefighters, men in the army, policemen.. they are all male heroes who risk their lives for us... I can't think of many women that do that.

The thought of a woman charging into a building to save strangers doesn't seem logical to me.

Bravery and women doesn't seem to coexist... and being "brave" because you had unprotected sex and got an abortion IS NOT A HERO.

IMHO
