My husband's birthday is right around the corner. I had originally planned a full night of celebration, but he asked me to save my money to put towards the home we're looking to purchase. He's the captain of our family and I don't want to go against his wishes. However, it feels wrong to let his birthday pass by when he works so hard for us.

His only request is that I prepare him a dinner similar to one we would have enjoyed at a restaurant, so I have the menu and grocery list planned. I cook dinner every night so, while this food will be more gourmet than our usual, it doesn't seem like enough - especially since our 3 year old and 10 month old will be home with us.

Would a small gift be appropriate or should I stick to his request and focus on the meal?
