OKAY - so this might be a long post. I (23 female) have recently starting dating someone AMAZING (27 male). I never thought I could feel like this. He checks every box for me. He is so intelligent and kind-hearted. Educated, works extremely hard. We are similar in many ways, but he is definitely more dominant, likes to lead the relationship, and appreciates the ways that I am feminine and gentle during out time together. Honestly I've never thought I could really find someone who I would want to "settle down" with, and I've always been a bit scared of full commitment. But not with him. It's only been 3 months, but I am head over heals and can honestly envision a bright and beautiful future with him (which as I said, is rare for me.) I also know that he feels very serious about me and has said multiple times to me that he feels very close to me and that it shocks him how quickly he feels like we are getting close. We have the same values and want the same kind of life. We have talked a lot about what we see as problems with modern parenting and really fall in line completely there (haven't had these convos in reference to our own future, more just about society).
I am not one to rush into things, so if we were under normal circumstances I'd just keep dating him, and hope (and work!) that it turns into a LTR relationship and that we can stay together and build a future. However -- there is a big thing that complicates this relationship. We are both on a fellowship program abroad in another country. I am originally from the USA and he is from Canada. (Our respective cities are about a 10 hour drive apart). The fellowship is going to be over at the end of December, so three more months from now. Before the program started we both planned to go back home to our own cities. We haven't yet talked about the future beyond this 6 month fellowship. He is very passionate about his career and his family (which I love) - but those are things that are primarily based in Canada for him. Once when we were a bit drunk and sleeply he sweetly said to me "Are you going to move to Canada with me?" I very honestly answered: "That's a big question, we will need to talk about that later." I am not sure he even remembers asking me this question, and we didn't bring it up directly again. The other day very recently he told me that he has been contemplating the future with me, but we didn't get into much detail about what that means. I think the main problem is that right now everything is going so well and is light and fun and we don't want serious talks about the future to put too much of a damper or ominous mood over things - or add too much pressure onto the current state of affairs.
He honestly feels like "the one" even if that sounds cliche. I am certain we work well together and have so much to keep discovering. However, I have always put a ton of emphasis on my own social life, having my own hobbies, etc etc. And my whole life is in the USA. I don't know anyone in canada. I don't know anything about Canada. If I told my social circle back in the USA that I was moving to canada to be with someone that I have only known for 5-6 months they will think I am crazy. (Same with my parents). I doubt that I will be able to adjust happily to a new city where the only person I know is a boyfriend. I am torn in two. I know I need to talk to him about it, but I really want advice from you guys before I have that convo. Do you guys think it would be foolish to follow a man to another country (though, it is a very close country, where language and customs are the same, etc) or should I go back home to the USA and see if we can work something out over time/maybe end the relationship forever? Are there things that I missing when thinking this through?
EDIT: I should also mention one other thing that makes the relationship very special: the fellowship we are doing is for young people who are of a certain ethnic background, in the home country, but grew up entirely outside of the country. So we both share a unique ethnic background (it is a small country). That means we understand eachothers customs and heritage in a unique way, while both still being from the west with a western upbringing and values.
I have never really met, or let alone dated, many people from my ethnic background and never envisioned this kind of connection with someone who can share that with me. This also makes the idea of having a family together that much more enticing and special, because we could pass certain things down to our children in a way that I would not be able to do with anyone I've dated in the past, or can see myself dating back in the USA.
