I just wanted to share something that is hard for me, but so important: receiving graciously!
When my bf and I first started dating, he always made sweet gestures that I, so so so appreciated, and would tell him how much appreciated it was and then go right ahead and tell him "no thank you." I didn't want to be a burden or an imposition.
I love giving. I'm a giver, and there is a real joy in giving. By not accepting the gifts from him, I was not cultivating our connection or showing him that I valued his gifts and I deprived him of the joy of giving.
An example is when I needed a ride from the airport, he would offer to pick me up. I declined as it was late and I didn't want to put him out. We were both thinking of each other, but his way of thinking was to turn toward each other and build the relationship, and mine was actually turning away from the relationship.
After about six months into our relationship, we went through a rough patch. He stopped giving as much and I started to feel unsupported. What happened? Well, I had through my actions, told him I didn't need him, didn't want his help, didn't want him, so many times that he finally got the message and stopped giving! Luckily we talked it out, tears were had, and I felt so much closer to him.
It took some time for him to get the "giving" spirit back, but slowly and surely he got back to his nature and has always been there for me and is so generous with his time, love and support. Only because I've been open to receive it graciously. It is one of the cornerstones of our relationship today. We both give and receive freely from each other now and we're so much closer for it.
Now, the other hard one that I still need to work on is taking better care of myself. He's constantly telling me that it's not okay for me to ignore a 102 degree fever, or to get checked out after a bad fall, or whatever else. That's for me to work on next!
What are some ways you and your captain give to each other? And what are the ways you receive?
