Seconding OkCupid. It's really good. You get plenty of people who are there for a lot more than just sex, and it's possible to find really good matches once you've answered a bunch of questions.
I met my captain there! He is amazing. I've also had a number of other relationships from OkCupid. It's a good place.
A tip for a girl dipping her toe into the online dating pool... do message guys first, but don't ask them out in that message.
I actually read The Surrendered Single after I had already started dating my captain. In that book she gives the tip of making it clear to guys that you would say yes if they asked you out - which I realized I had done with my captain on OkCupid. I was browsing profiles and he seemed SO cool, but there was something about me that I thought would be a dealbreaker for him, so I just sent him a "Hey, you seem super cool, I guess it wouldn't work out for us but I hope you find someone amazing!" message.
Turned out it wasn't a dealbreaker, and two years later we're counting down the days until we can get married and start a family. :)

On the topic of OKCupid questions, I once read an article about how some of these online dating sites give us too many choices, with so much information.
For example, had I met my fiance on OKCupid, instead of Plenty of Fish, his questions might have told me that he doesn't like cats and would never own one. I love cats and couldn't wait to get one when I was dating. I'd have turned down a hypothetical man I had never met for a cat I knew I'd be getting. Instead, I never saw these questions or answers and after 7 months of dating, when I could finally get a cat, I not only realized I'd choose the man I loved over a hypothetical cat I'd never met, but he had realized he could handle me having a cat. Now I have my guy and my cat.
My point is, the questions are great, but only answer the ones that really matter to you to limit your information and criteria to only the important things. Otherwise, you might veto someone, or be vetoed yourself, over something inconsequential.

OkCupid!!!! I met my fiancé there, and I've seen many women on Reddit say the same!!! I used Tinder for like a day back then, I found it was really impersonal and I think it's just a hookup app. No idea of other sites except match.com which a coworker told me was crappy and needed to pay for

My friend met his gf on Coffee meets Bagel. It's ridiculous how well they mesh together. Still going strong.

None. I used tinder for like two days once and then deleted it. Meet guys in real life!

I agree. Context matters A LOT in terms of how much men will value you

I don't think dating apps are your best bet at this stage. You're shy? Make some friends, pick up some hobbies, volunteer, build a social network, practice your poise and manners. It's so much easier to vet men through your social network than through a dating site.
A man on a dating site can spin any lie he wants to get you in bed. You'll have better luck with a woman who wants to set you up with her amazing brother or her boyfriend's loyal best friend.

Avoid eHarmony. They never take down expired accounts, so you could be messaging a man who got his account four years ago on a free trial and is now married with a kid. Furthermore, they constantly sent me emails telling me that if I didn't expand my physical range (which was only limited to a thriving metropolis and its suburbs), I'd never meet anyone. It's also one of the most expensive options.
Match was okay, though they had the same trouble of showing profiles of non-subscribers. You could, however, get substantial coupons online and their six months free requirement was really easy to fulfill. They did a couple of Match events in my area, too, where you could meet people in person. This ended up being a little silly to me, because it just voided all the perks of dating online (knowing things about him) for all the deficits (knowing nothing and having to turn someone down in person).
I met my guy on Plenty of Fish and he'd messaged me on OKCupid, but I didn't respond months before. I don't remember him messaging and think that was the downside to getting so many messages. Honestly the same people are going to show up across all sites, so start free.
Don't do it, its mostly lying timewasters who want to hook up and lie to do so. If you do use something, try a religious one or a paying one with caution
