Tl;dr if you make a good impression with people you can expect carry over benefits for the duration of the relationship.
One thing you rarely hear mentioned with first impressions but is something I've noticed again and again in life, if you give people a very positive first impression and they tag you as a winner they will tend to work with you and for you to help you succeed. By doing so it justifies to them internally that they have a good ability to pick if someone is a winner or a loser.
For instance, if you come across initially as a strong, high value male to a potential girlfriend, she will actually go to bat in your court even if you mess up following this, because she has already self identified you as someone she sees as a winner in life and doesn't want to let go of that idea or question her own ability to identify high quality men. Once women make that initial positive recommendation of you to their friends its very very difficult to come down from that as they now have a personal connection to that recommendation, they are now wrong if you are not the man they say.
The same situation happens in the workforce, I have seen bosses overlook blatant incompetence of people who they classify as strong men because their vision of that person is twisted by their first impressions, even if following that their work ethic and ability haven't lived up to that initial opinion.
People often throw around why first impressions matter, but it really is underestimated. If you make a negative first impression its almost impossible to ever shake that, all of your actions from that point will be judged through the lens of that impression as people almost want you to fail to show they were right, but the absolute opposite is true if people think you're a high quality person, it takes a lot of screw ups to demote yourself down from that point and quite often people will still view it as temporary shortcomings of a high quality character.
