In 1986, at age 27 I married a girl with $5,000 on her credit cards and a loan on a fairly new car. I was debt free.

I paid most of my whole paycheck against her debt until it was down to zero. We talked and she wanted me to start paying down her car. I declined.

Less than a month later she told me we were getting a divorce. I said, "You can charge up $2500 cash on your cards to pay me back." She laughed and said, "I'm not going into debt for you."

And that was the end of the 14 months long marriage.

Well basically Its really hard to get married to someone whos in over their heads in debt, both men and women. Because if im correct (dont qoute me) I think you can take on their debt to a certain amount if your married. As in if they die you have to pay, but im not entirely sure this is true, I think it depends on the types of loans you took out. But also normally people in debt, which for most people under 30 is mostly from college, and even some of those over 30 (we can hope not, but life sucks), are a loss if your not in debt, because what wife/husband is not going to expect their partner to "chip in" and help them get out of debt. But what if you dont want to help them get out of debt? Well tough shit for the most part, youll be faced with a range of shit test for trying. If your like me and you have no debt, why would you take on that risk and have to help someone else out of debt, which in these days can be huge amounts.

Now just because you dont go to college for starters does not make you "uneducated" there are many people who are very intelligent who did not go to college. And on the same line, just because you go to college does not mean your going to come out in massive debt. The biggest three reasons they come out with debt that they cant handle is that they had, no family help, they stayed more then 5 years/ switched majors, or they got a crap major and are now waiting tables. Most people who come out of college with good degrees who work hard to pay off their debt can be out in 5-10 years roughly. And yes those people are worth more.Ill take a person with a good degree that paid of their debt, and ill wait for that person as well. And on the same note ill take a girl who knows college is not for her whos happy in her desk job, then an idiot with a painting degree and 50k+ in debt.

It makes sense to me personally, why the hell would you marry someone with a mountain of debt, wait till they pay it off or get it to a reasonable amount. Or if you choose to help them then go for it. This is not about relationships as much as its common financial sense. Also anti-dowery is an awesome term for this.

The authors seems clueless about the crock of shit that modern marriage is for men.

Especially in modern societies.

I can't think of any modern women in my social circle, maybe one, that is good with money. They spend it on handbags, clothes, travel, drinking, restaurants. I know a single mom that has a car lease in NYC. A place where having a car is not necessary and then she does a lease on top of that. Just clueless shit.

I have to look at older generations for a decent example.

Men are no better honestly as well. But women are especially targeted by marketers. Remember most married women control household spending.

My wife still eats potato skins from baked potatoes and uses spoons to scrape out the last bit of shit from jars of whatnot and doesn't spend money on anything, and saves sturdy plastic containers from shit to re use it, IE, eat all of something, wash the container, now have a container for homemade food she cooks

As a child I had once had the pleasure of visiting the slums of India. I am NOT going back there again. Being poor is so fucking depressing. It's a battle. You pick a poison, rampant alcohol and drug abuse; violence is common.

If you want to see how bad shit is. Go volunteer at a homeless shelter. And imagine yourself there. And maybe then you'll think about marrying a bit with -$100,000 in loans.

While I agree women tend to spend more than men, I know PLENTY of men who are horrible with money as well.

Just think about how much money men blow on cars, sport event tickets, going out drinking, gambling, smoking, watches, etc.

It's just that women's consumption is more visual - women tend to like to accumulate material things. Men blow money on stupid shit as well, just that they tend to be non-material - gambling, sports events, etc...

Let's face it, men and women are both bad in this consumption based society. Yes women tend to spend more than men. Yes women are less likely to sacrifice to save (i.e. brown bagging lunch every day).

You can't always get a straightforward answer about these things, especially not early on, and definitely not if it's really bad (6 figure debt)

The solution here is a simple EFA type approach. Being a wise, frame-holding man, you will say or otherwise make apparent in reasonable and fair terms that you made your own debt decisions based on your own life variables, and she made hers. It's not your problem and its not going to be your problem. If you say this early enough, then her continuing with you is essentially consenting to that condition. And if she balks or tries some dramatic bullshit (e.g. "A real man would step up to the plate blah blah blah"), instantly soft-next or hard next if its bad enough. Just remember that YOU are in the right, YOU have no obligation to take on her debt, that's social pressure engineered to take what you have. Feel confident in knowing you made a logical, rational and self-preserving decision.
