This fertility countdown ticks away constantly in the head of every 20-something-year-old girl, reminding her of all the speed bumps ahead. It doesn’t matter if she wants to have children or not – she can still hear the countdown.

Come on guys, let's revel in it a little. Wrinkles make us look distinguished, we don't have to take time off to have kids, and women still want us when we're older!

Sarah, 23, says: “I don’t even know if I want to have children but I still want the option. There’s the pressure to catch men between girlfriends, or then I won’t be left with anyone good. But if you’re younger, then you have more options.”

Where is this Sarah girl? I'll give you something between girlfriends, but it won't be a baby!

Mum, former F1 correspondent and Telegraph Wonder Women writer Beverley Turner says she doesn't think it's possible: “My generation was brought up to think you can have it all, and now there are enough voices talking about it not being possible, because you can’t have it all. Hopefully if you’re forewarned you’re forearmed.”

In all seriousness though, at least the rabid feminists of yesteryear are learning from their mistakes (and passing the knowledge on to their daughters). How this knowledge will play out (other than I a lot of weeping and wailing) is hard to know. Will women stop riding the carousel, or start riding it all the more furiously because they feel the pressure?
