Yeah this has been going on for a while now. As cold as it sounds, don't do shit for a pregnant woman if there is any doubt of paternity.

Sigh.... You're blowing these rulings out of proportion and leaving out the context of what is really happening.

Most states in the US create a presumption of paternity in certain circumstances. For example, if a child is born in wedlock, the husband of the woman who gave birth is presumed by the law to be the father. Similarly, if a man voluntarily and openly acknowledges a child to be his own (such as listing himself as the "father" on the birth certificate or child's school registration), then the law presumes the man to be the father.

As the word "presumption" implies, it is not a set-in-stone fact. So, most states give a putative father the ability to legally challenge that preemption. This is typically done through DNA testing.

The catch, however, is that there is usually a limited time period to challenge that presumption. In Oklahoma, it must be done before the child turns 2. In Texas, it must be done before the child turns 4.

Once the timeline to challenge the presumption of paternity has passed, the presumption becomes irrebuttable. It doesn't matter at that point if you have 20 DNA tests supported by an affidavit from Jesus Christ himself which show you could not possibly be the biological father -- the law conclusively presumes you are the father and treats you as the father for all purposes, including custody and child support. This is done for the benefit of the child and to keep people from waiting for opportune moments (like during a divorce) to bring issues like that up. [Women do this frequently. Often the men still want to have interaction with the children they've spent years raising, even if the child isn't biologically their own. These laws help prevent women from using paternity as leverage in those instances].

The point of all this: get a DNA test on your kid early on. Within a month or so of it being born. If the results come back and you aren't the daddy, get a lawyer and act quickly. This area of the law is definitely one where if you snooze, you can badly lose.

You have like a year.

If you wait until the kid's like 5 you can't run the test and stop being a dad.

Get a test done asap , within a month of birth if possible.

Whenever there is a doubt of any kind, you must act as if you are NOT the father until proven otherwise. I cannot state it more simply than that.

Get a paternity test, ALWAYS. Do however, tell the women you want to have children with beforehand. This way she won't feel like you don't trust her when you bring it up out of the blue after the birth.

In quite a few jurisdictions there is a phrase "Child of the marriage" and that means the child does not necessarily belong to both parties, its a child in the marriage.

Sort of like the woman buys a car without asking the man. But both parties must pay for the car as its an "asset" in the marriage...

The only way to be sure you're safe is not to risk a child unless you live in a nation where no such laws/courts exist. There are many. Get looking. America isn't it, nor Canada.

As always with these posts, you fail to mention how this ruling is justified and when it actually makes sense.

It's the child and not the mother who is entitled to the child support and the parent the child is living with is just the administrator of it.

If you are granting a child support, either by granting it a roof over its head, food, clothes, etc. or by paying support, there should be a moment after a period of time, where it is safe for the child to assume that you are the person to be held reliable for its needs.

This is also the fact oncr you chose to acknowledge that this is your child.

It is needed to create legal certainty.
