Just about every woman can get sex if she wants it with minimal effort. Her choosing to ignore that and use a dildo is "empowering." A man must take all the risks and still may not get any. Giving up and buying a fleshlight is "creepy" and lazy.

After giving it some more thought, I think this issue ties into the mainstream view that men are supposed to be the providers of pleasure, as well as the one taking an active role in sex.

However, women are rarely the instigator of sex, and is often portrayed as a passive receptacle of pleasure (how many movies show women giving blowjobs?). This creates a mental image that women, to borrow a term from Patrice (may he rest in pimp), are the fuckee, while men are the fucker. This implies that if a woman gets a dildo, she is empowering herself - I don't need fuckers to get fucked, I can fuck myself.

But if you provide a man a way to provide the same pleasure sans a woman, you are essentially disempowering the man. Because the act of getting a woman and providing pleasure to her is perceived as manly, by taking away the woman and replacing it with a tool you can buy off the shelf, it is implied that you, as a man, is not man enough to provide enough pleasure to a woman for a steady supply of sex.

And that is why it feels awkward when we see men masturbating, but hot when we see women doing the same thing. It all boils down to simple SMV.
