Fucking GOOD FOR HER. And I'm not being sarcastic. People can derive motivation in all sorts of ways. Looks like she found hers.

I finally got pissed about my weight and I am losing and lifting. Nothing else is more important than what I put into my body and how I move it. No excuses. No blame.

In the same boat as you. 4 years into a relationship, and my eating and exercise habits had diminished brutally. But it doesn't happen overnight, see. It's a slow boil effect to slipping out of shape. What complicated matters for me was that my ex was 5'5, 120lbs, but ate like complete shit; she had the metabolism of a rabid mongoose; but I don't. Now she's been gone for 2 months, I'm already down 15 pounds, and I'm even feeling better.

I love this:

'There are also things that people take for granted, like being able to cross my legs under my desk at work, sitting in an aeroplane seat comfortably and being able to walk between two cars in a car park without worrying you’d get stuck.'

Reads like a rooshv parody.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yeah, it's comedic how fat people get. I mean i understand a little bit overweight, maybe even like 50-100lbs over, but anything more than that is fucking ludicrous. Those people just look like they have no direction or willpower left, it's sad and hilarious at the same time.

I feel sad every time I go there. You can tell they are miserable and want to change but feel stuck or can't make the effort. Subs like that are horrible because they encourage it.

I remember reading a blog post of a woman who couldn't wipe her ass because she was so fat. She had to hold it in at work, and if she couldn't, she would just stink until she got home where her mom could help her.

There was a comment with a great analysis - the guy wondered how someone gets to that point, and when does it become an emergency. Certainly there was some point where she could still wipe herself but it was getting difficult. Shouldn't she have taken action then? She had to have consciously decided not to take action, even though it was clear where things were headed.

Edit: a word

The only ones complaining about fat shaming are the fat ones too lazy to change and become healthier.

I bet it's made up. Don't believe everything you read. Especially in the Dailymail.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I applaud that website for having the balls to post that.

It's the daily mail: If you'll click, they'll post. That's the essence of their business model.

[–]TRP VanguardJP_Whoregan 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Daily Mail posts all kinds of shit that the American media would never DARE post.

I packed on some kilos over the years but I used to be extremely lean and fit. I played rugby, did mixed martial arts as well as weight training. That ended when I injured my arm and it wasn't a major injury but it required either a few years to heal or surgery that may or may not work. I opted for the few years to heal and got lazy.

My appetite hadn't changed and I packed on the kilos while not obese I had about 10 extra kilos. I met my current girlfriend during this period. Now fast forward a few years my is mostly arm healed and I get back to weight training and dieting and the kilos are dropping off and my strength is returning.

My girlfriend says she hates how hard I am on myself and how I put myself down for being so fat but she doesn't realize that it is the greatest motivator of them all. She wonders how I can be so confident yet tearing myself down at the same time but it's quite simple. I am extremely hard on my weaknesses so I do something about them and turn them into strengths.

If you feel bad about something you are more motivated to do something about it. If you accept how things are you won't.

[–]ajswdf 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

They've actually done studies that have shown fat shaming doesn't work, which surprised me. I guess the idea is that when people criticize you, you become defensive and less likely to change.

On the other hand, I can't imagine that a general culture that views being fat as positive would motivate people to lose weight either. It's just the people have to come to the conclusion to lose weight themselves.

[–]someotherdudeagain[S] 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Most "studies" in social psychology are hatched inside a progressive's fetid ass.

This sort of social pressure has kept Japan and South Korea at low single digit obesity rates. People, but especially women, are hard-wired to respond to social norms and be sensitive to social rejection. Now you don't need to be rude, just learn to ignore fat people and don't include them in your social activities. Do that on a large scale and you've achieved social change.

So all that "fat acceptance" is actually making people fatter.

But not all fattivists are young. The few that I know are in their 40s and 50s. The denial in these people is astounding.. not only do they label themselves beautiful when they can't even wipe their ass (and as a result some smell like shit - not all, but some), but they see it as perfectly normal to be on all sorts of drugs and walk around with an inhaler.

I kid you not, I once went into a club (I'm curious like that) and met a fat young woman eating her fries and burger (it was around midnight), and after an inhaler puff managed to say "hi, I'm xy, nice to meet you". Couldn't believe it.

p.s. no offence to asthma sufferers of course. It's just that being fat exacerbates the symptoms.

[–]Bulldog44 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I care because fat people are disgusting to look at. Fucking revolting. Have some goddamn self-respect.

[–]asd1100 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Individually there is no guarantee(I think the story is made up), it really depends on the person, but putting social pressure and not giving up as a society and redefining "healthy and beautiful" just so nobody gets hurt feelings will inevitably push young people to take the hard road, which avoids loneliness and low self worth in the long run.

[–]Endorsed Contributorredpillbanana 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Always? No, there will always be individual cases where it doesn't work, where the donut is more important than getting laid.

On an aggregate level over an entire culture or country, yes, it will absolutely reduce the number of fat and obese people.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Actually no, but better than nothing - the preferable thing was actually having social standards like in the past. There is a difference. Shaming just means many individuals have a negative opinion of that thing. Standards are one level higher than that. Like, farting in a restaurant. We don't say Jill, Jack, Joe has a negative opinion about that, we say it is not accepted by society as such.

[–]forgotmydamnpass 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The guy was an asshole about it but you can't deny that it works, still I don't think he needed to throw his drink at her

[–]Haraklus 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Throwing your drink at a fatty is like throwing money at Bill Gates. Why do it? What are you going to achieve?

[–]claytonian 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Or it drives people to suicide. But hey.

[–]Bulldog44 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They're going to die young anyway.

Shes still a porker but props for taking some action. This quote from the article is also a great example of how the hamster rolls re: cheating and other rationalizations:

"Steph said: 'I thought that if no one saw me doing it, then I hadn’t done it, which is never a good way to be."
