I just want to reiterate a very well known method how to adopt new habits. It helped me to workout consistently, learn to code, learn a new language, improve my reading habits, save money and much more.
Now.. this method is not very complex nor is it something new under the sun... It is just a method that might be beneficial to you. There are other ways of adopting habits. However, I would recommend to try it and see for yourself.
Planning - Baby steps - Starting right now
All these concepts are useful on their own, however, putting them together promotes adoption of new habits and improves your life (it did mine at least ...and I was a habitual procrastinator).
- Planning. You will rarely accomplish anything without setting goals and creating a plan to achieve them. "Without goals, and plans to reach them, you are like a ship that has set sail with no destination".
- Baby steps. Starting slow allows you to acclimate to your new tasks/habits. Starting something new is not very difficult. Being consistent is! How do you become consistent? You could just be a strong willed, responsible and an extremely driven person. However, if you have trouble adopting new habits... you probably aren't. Here come the baby steps.... Starting small and continuing small for some time helps your mind and body to acclimate. What does starting small mean? It means that first couple habit sessions should not be over 15 minutes long. Ideally, your activity should be under 5-10 minutes for the first 1-2 weeks. Note: If you are a real procrastinator/ weak willed, I would suggest adopting only one new habit at time so you are not overwhelmed.
- Starting right now. Start your new habit right now (if you can). If not right now, start TODAY. Create a plan today and start your habit TODAY. I cannot stress this enough TODAY.
PROCESS
- Plan the habit and write it down -> This creates accountability, direction and helps you track if you did the task
- Make the activity very short at first -> Around 10 minutes. Because the activity is so short you can definitely find the energy to do it. The activity can stay short forever but it doesn't have to.
- Schedule it for a time when you can actually do the task - It should not be hard to schedule it in the beginning since its only 10 minutes.
- DO IT REGULARLY. I would suggest everyday if you really want to adopt the habit.
This is basically it. I included some examples below for those interested
New language example
1st step - Create a habit check list - This can be a some type of notes app (it needs to have a check list option) on your phone/computer. Here you will write down your daily habits that you already do every day.
Oversimplified example:
Morning
- Shower
- Clean teeth
- Make bed
- Make breakfast
Evening
- Clean teeth
- Clean kitchen for the day
2nd step - Research how to learn a new language - You need to find material and how to learn a new language. There are thousand of free resources on the internet to do this. However, I would recommend a book that also has exercises. If you want (and have the resources), you can buy a physical one.
3rd step - Divide part of your learning material into 10-15 minute chunks - You need to divide part of the learning material into small chunks. I usually divide them into 28 parts when I m starting. It doesn't have to be precise and you'll learn to estimate it more correctly as time goes on.
4th step - Put a 10-15 minute learning task in your daily habit list - I usually do this in the morning. I wake up 15 minutes earlier and do my new habit task in that time. I do this EVERY DAY. It's quick, low effort and I actually have enough motivation and energy to do the task.
Morning
- Learning German
- Shower
- Clean teeth
- Make bed
- Make breakfast
Evening
- Clean teeth
- Clean kitchen for the day
5th step - NEVER MISS A DAY! You will.. but this is the attitude you should have.
6th step - Look at your habit check list every day and mark it down if you completed your tasks
Working out example
You want to start working out but you never worked out before? You want to get back to working out but have hard time finding energy and time?
1st step - Create a habit check list - this can be a note in your phone/computer where you write down your daily habits that you already do every day.
Oversimplified example:
Morning
- Shower
- Make bed
- Make breakfast
- Clean teeth
Evening
- Clean teeth
- Clean kitchen for the day
2nd step - Plan your habit - So you want to start working out? Well, you could go to the gym for 1 hour and travel 40 minutes there and back. However, you might lack the motivation to do so. It's a lot of time... you will need to buy a gym membership.. get workout clothes..
On the other hand, you might be super motivated right now and have no problem going to the gym. Your gf just broke up with you.. or you saw a post on instagram of a super jacked guy and you want to be like him.... or you just somehow found the motivation to improve yourself.... How long will this initial burst of motivation last? You might just keep working out till the rest of your life. OR will it last 1 week ? 1 month ? Until you get the flu and be sick for 1 week?
A more reliable method, in my opinion, is to start small. Put in your habit checklist a new entry
Morning
- 40 pushups and 40 squats
- Shower
- Make bed
- Make breakfast
- Clean teeth
Now, one of your habits is to do 40 pushups and 40 squats a day. If you do not know how to do these two exercises, you can watch 2 youtube videos and stand in front of the mirror to check your form. Check the videos again. Check your form. You can now likely do pushups and squats. You have a habit you can do everyday and it takes you under 10 minutes.
During your first week you can do only 40 pushups and 40 squats every day (if this is too difficult, start lower). Next week you do 50/50 every day. Third week you can add 60 crunches in your routine 4th week 55/55/70. You can slowly build up the intensity.
I've done a routine of 80 pushups/ 80 squats/ 90 weighted crunches for two years now. I alternate this routine with a 15 minute run. I can do it before breakfast. It's fast. I get a lot of energy for the day. It doesn't interfere with my 4x a week gym routine.
3rd step - Adapt or improve this habit to whatever you like
Shorter/ Longer workout
Full body/ Major exercises
Add stretching/ Don't add it
4th step - NEVER MISS A DAY! You will.. but this is the attitude you should have - I was never overtrained doing this, however, do what you think is best
5th step - Look at your habit check list every day and mark it down if you completed your tasks
