Random House will be held liable as well if Barry wins his suit, and Random House has a lot more money than Lena, so they will be the real target here for Barry.

They are trying to turn the tide of public opinion against him, and cut out his crowd sourced funding so that he can't afford a lawsuit with them.

Here's what Barry should do:

He should sue her in Canadian court. The book was distributed in Canada, which means there is jurisdiction there. The payoff is less because Canadian courts don't often award punitive damages. However, he is much more likely to win his suit in Canada, in fact, it's basically a slam dunk. In Canada if you sue someone for defamation the onus is on them to prove they told truth. In U.S. Barry will have to prove she is lying.

He should also just get a lawyer who is willing to work on contingency so he doesn't need the crowd funding aspect.
