If somebody was asking for a one-word or phrase answer for a question that they had, this definitely hurts. I was displeased that I wasn't able to help someone out with their question on here just yesterday, but I can understand the underlying context. It does help us to expound our thoughts a little bit more, and forces us to give just a bit more than a one-word response, even though that is what some questions ask for. I personally think it's for the best.

Even if it's useful for the basic replies, a comment to a comment (like this thing i'm writing right here) often doesn't need to be long. I mean, I can't even ask you a short question regarding your comment without it being deleted...

[–]SeekingAlpha 19 points20 points21 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I second OP.

It's understandable why this was considered a good idea yet sometimes a few words is all that is needed to get a point across.

Otherwise, people will find workarounds like:

This.... ..... ...... .....

and that could get quite annoying/more work for mods.

[–]LibertarianLibertine 5 points6 points7 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sometimes a comment doesn't require more than 5 words to be meaningful. I prefer short comments when I'm on my phone and this auto-remove annoys the fuck out of me.

[–]2Overkillengine 4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Brevity is the soul of wit.

Besides, if a short comment is useless to the discussion at hand, that's what the downvote button is for.

Asking us to take longer to pad the word count of a comment is ironic given that one of the stances of this sub is that spending too much time on social media/internet is bad.

[–]pwrfull 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It depends on the context. Short quips do on occasion liven up some of the discussions. I've gotten good belly laughs from pun stacks laced one over another. If that was the entirety of the comments on most posts here, then it would definitely be lacking of in depth, hearty analysis and commentary. I do see great value in holding this subreddit to a high standard, so more thought and care goes towards making comments that contribute constructively to the discussions.

[–]ygbs[🍰] 8 points9 points10 points 12 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

Also, making a witty joke in comments is not as easy as it was before.

Mods don't want useless posts, they specifically mentioned witty jokes as examples of this. I guess now you'll have to be more specific and link the actual thread, not just to tell them to read the sidebar.

[–]Endorsed Contributorvandaalen 6 points7 points8 points 12 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

link the actual thread

Will be removed by the auto-moderation bot because of "no brigading". So you need to use redditlog or something, or wait until one of the mods will enable your post again.

I honestly giggle a little bit when I think about the fact that many here have the political views of some neoliberals but try to solve problems with more regulations instead of letting the swarm deal with it.

This. The regulatory BS is counter-productive. I understand that some of the strict rules are driven by a need to avoid giving the Reddit Admins any reason to shut down TRP (given that we are not popular to say the least). However, TRP functions in part as a venue for venting, seeking camaraderie, etc., and arbitrary rules against jokes, short comments, etc., run counter to this.

[–]LibertarianLibertine 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm not very familiar with the Reddit hierarchy, why would the Reddit Admins shut us down?

[–]cascadecombo 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

The regulatory BS is counter-productive

the "regulatory BS" is a very good thing that keeps this sub from going to shit with worthless comments and idiots circle jerking. This is a sub for discussion, not saying, AFBB LOL!!!1!11!, and then expecting to get internet points.

[–]OsoFeo 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Respectfully, I disagree. Humor can be a powerful form of communication, and (as another commenter said) brevity is the soul of humor.

Some short comments are worthless and idiotic, but that's what the downvote arrow is for.

[–]cascadecombo 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Yes it can be, but is that how it is commonly used on reddit? No, I would dare to say it is rarely used in that sense. Especially in the comments.

The type of humor you see in the comments, and I as many others had been noticing in TRP as well was pun filled circle jerk comments, or throngs of newbies venting anger by making a crack about something everyone was able to already clearly see.

Those types of comments add nothing to any conversation.

Some short comments are worthless and idiotic, but that's what the downvote arrow is for.

I'm pretty sure I mentioned this as well but, those short worthless comments do not get downvoted, more often than not they are upvoted because they play toward the lowest common denominator.

[–]OsoFeo -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I'm pretty sure I mentioned this as well but, those short worthless comments do not get downvoted, more often than not they are upvoted because they play toward the lowest common denominator.

Well, you're describing a real tension between competing aims. Should TRP be a place to relax and have a camaraderie-building conversation? Or should it be a resource with high signal-to-noise ratio? It is entirely within the mods' rights to shape the sub the way they want it to go, but I want to register my 2c worth of an opinion: that in times where male spaces are becoming increasingly rare, it's valuable to have a place where guys can just be guys, even if it means some level of idiocy.

I've defended TRP in the past for being a resource of theoretical material you won't find many other places, and register some embarassment over the more rageful or stupid posts. So I am sympathetic to the goal of maintaining high signal. But while policing comments helps in thie regard, it also detracts from other valuable aims.

[–]cascadecombo 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I see what you're saying about having space to talk. They even have made a other TRP subs like the new offtopic sub I would assume.

This main sub has always been about discussion and having a proper discussion vs the pointless banter people have been starting to gravitate towards. Again, that is because of the lowest common denominator. The quality of material in the sub has been declining since the bursts of enrollment, there is no real need for that to be here, guys can shoot the shit in many places, but there aren't many places that actually have quality information for people trying to get a grasp on the social dynamics that they had been misinformed about for so long. They need these cold hard truths over any sort of 'boys club' or 'camaraderie' if anything, those sort of feelings will come naturally as a side effect of learning from the experience of others and then in turn being able to share with the newer members.

[–]OsoFeo 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Maybe the mods need to make a definite decision to shape TRP in the direction of theory or in the direction of friendly discussion, and then create a new sub (or repurpose TRPOffTopic) to serve the other purpose.

It doesn't seem to me like very many people are using TRPOffTopic, unfortunately.

It's too bad things aren't what they used to be (like, say, a year ago) but I guess all things change. On the plus side, more people are taking an interest in RP thought, and that's a net positive.

[–]cascadecombo 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, it is a nice thing. So long as the quality is up it'll stay as a very nice thing since more people will have the chance to be exposed to quality information.

The mods do seem to be working to stay on top of shit, so everything will pan out at some point and then posts like these hopefully won't be necessary.

[–]Senior ContributorDemonspawn 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

many here have the political views of some neoliberals

That everyone is equal and that truth is decided by number of subscribers?

TRP couldn't be any further from that if they tried.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

yes please. this bot is so annoying =.=

[–]BustinAllKindsOfNuts 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Please remove short comments. Some us don't want to write essays for simple questions & answers.

[–][deleted] 2 points2 points2 points 12 years ago | Copy Link

[permanently deleted]

[–]Villaintine -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I agree with the use of the bot. Any replies that could be answered with comments that would trigger the bot such as AFBB, hypergamy, AWALT, etc should have the post deleted anyway.

[–]cascadecombo -4 points-3 points-2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Also, making a witty joke in comments is not as easy as it was before.

sounds like you're sad you can't pander to the lowest common denominator for internet points. Go find another sub.
