Question: how do you convince yourself you want something? (may sound not serious, but it is)

we get all confused about what we want because of shame, etc. and we try to please someone else. then you recognize this is a losing game, and then you try to make yourself happy. but you've been out of touch with this aspect of yourself so long it's confusing. you cant logically deduce what's good to go for. and it's confusing because you're used to having someone tell you what's good and what's worth going for. and you're used to stamping out your natural ambition and desires.

But men have already a lot of energy and natural ambition. So the point is to get the garbage out of the way, then, try to relate to and manage your natural desires as a human and a man. It's not gonna be perfect, and you cant just follow whatever you feel, obviously. But it's better than living basically at odds with yourself, or working against yourself, or denying yourself or ignoring yourself.

Also, are you exercising regularly? running a few miles a day a few days a week will help.

I'm not sure I follow, but I'll try my best to respond.

I don't think I've ever decided that I like to do something. If I enjoy it, if I have fun doing it, if I like myself more for doing it, then I like it. But none of that is a conscious decision, it's just feeling happy.

Imho it sounds as if you were depressed or just out of depression but not normal yet. I suggest basing your free timemon three pillars: sports, intellectual hobby and social hobby.

If you're indeed indifferent about it, pick a sport that is technically challenging and timewise and monetary wise the cheapest. Stick with it for half a year, then recheck if you feel like staying. If you don't, change it.

Intellectual hobby: pick something that is intellectually a bit of a challenge. Same rule as above.

Social hobby: try to volunteer at leasr once a week. This will give your existence some meaning when you feel down. Only change this if you feel very unhappy about where you're volunteering.

Examples: I picked bouldering, learning languages and volunteering in a student group. Ambition will eventually find you when depression fades or if one of the hobbies you picked is really the thing for you.
