I can't speak for the other professions but as a prospective medical student and a guy with many friends in Medical School I'll let you know about the surgeons and physicians. Doctors and higher professions don't discriminate based on gender but rather skill, aptitude and if you are an M4 trying to get a residency, your grades. Simply put, the harder professions in medicine to get into which are usually reserved for the top of the class, such as surgeons, are given to the students that are the best and they don't care if you are a guy or a girl. You get what you work for. Being a doctor is not about fair pay, it's about being good at what you do because if you fuck up you can ruin or worse end a persons life.

In addition let me put things in perspective with this, surgeons make usually around 500,000. That is nearly 10,000 a week. So a $700 difference is actually nothing to really note, that's a difference of about 7% which is 0.93 on the dollar.

It does. Control for hours and talent, and all wage gaps disappear.

Women earn 77% less money and do about 77% of the work. The 77% figure is LIFETIME AVERAGE and includes the time she spends not working while her husband supports her. The income and support she receives during that time DOES NOT COUNT in this 77%.

Women also generally choose lower paid (presumably easier) jobs because they don't have to support a family like men do.

Just because people have same job titles don't mean they close as many deals, manage the same budget or amount of people.

As for physicians, it is my understanding that males turn-and-burn through their patients, having many more billable encounters with patients feeling like a number while women spend more time with the patient making them happier with their care, but with less billable events

10 years after making their MD qualifications only 40% of women still work full time. The other 60% are either off work completely or work part time while "taking care of children".

Most women don't go to med uni to be doctors, they go there to find rich husbands.

Those 77% stats just took the average amount of money men made in a year and did the same for women. Nothing else is taken into account.

Think about it this way:

If female labor was inherently cheaper ... meaning same value added to a company for less cost to the company- wouldn't most high earning professions have more female employees per given job role?

Do we think companies are stupid enough to pass up hiring cheaper to get the same level of productivity?

If you don't think companies are essentially dumb - you come to the conclusion that overall, somehow, hiring women for a given job role gives you Less productivity. And that shows up in gendered earnings.

Women, as a whole, are less productive. Especially in their peak baby rabies days.

And before everyone gets on the "women are bad" bandwagon - no, they are different

It is already illegal in most countries to pay someone differently purely because of their gender.

If the wage gap was true:

there would be many successful discrimination lawsuits
all companies would preferentially hire women since they do the same work for less pay

Simple

In the US....medical doctors get paid differently based on what kind of medicine they specialize in......The lowest paid Doctors are General Practitioners and pediatrics......The highest paid are Cardiac and Neuro (brain) surgeons......Gen Practice and Pediatrics are more women than men.....Cardiac and Neuro are mostly men.

Surgeons are some of the highest skilled jobs out there. High risk and high stress. This is something 99% of people in the real world would never admit, but men are simply better than women at everything.

Think about it this way. Lets say you have a brain tumor and you have great insurance. Will you go to the random surgeon in your town, or will you find the best brain surgeon in the world? The best in the world will charge much more than the 2nd or even 3rd best.

The best surgeons are men, ergo they earn more.

This gave me a break down of the difference in earnings between a man and woman in the exact same, specific job.

An occupation is not the same as a job. Women in the exact same job, with the same company, with the same credentials, makes the same money.

More women will go into family medicine or be something like a dermatologist. Men are more likely to go in for types of surgery that are a lot more intense and involve messed up hours.

And $756 bucks a week isn't a lot: about $40k a year. Consider that a GP can pull in $100k-$200k while an ER doctor makes more like $350k-$400k, orthopods probably make more and those in nuclear medicine average a million bucks a year. Those are Canadian figures, I suspect the dollar amounts in the USA are even larger. Still, $756 a week when compensation is $400k, that is only a 10% difference.

But even the links point out more obvious facts: women are more likely to act in supporting role in the family. They work fewer hours and take themselves out of the workforce for a few years to have kids and care for them when they are young. Other points are that women are less likely to seek and accept promotions especially if they would have to relocate, and they are more likely to relocate with their man.

Female physicians value family and work. They don't work as long hours as men.

If a female surgeon spent most of their waking hours at work and ignored family obligations, I wager they would probably make more and at least be even.

Any gender difference in wage gaps can almost always be explained away by productivity and the amount of revenue an employee is generating for the company. As it should be. It is already illegal to discriminate solely because of gender. What the "Equal Pay" crowd wants is for women to be paid the same as men in all instances, without regards to differences in productivity. This is an unjust employment situation as anyone knows who has ever worked for an employer who doesn't reward productivity, but simply pays everyone the same. What it actually does is incentivize laziness and unfairly forces productive workers to carry the weight of the unproductive without additional compensation.

The 77% stat (more recently 78%... 79%... ok it's most recently 80%) comes from comparing the annual earnings of the average woman who works enough hours per YEAR to qualify as "full-time" by the US government's definition to the annual earnings of the average "full-time" man. There is no accounting for education, years of experience, or type of work.

Most importantly, there is no accounting for HOURS of work. Some people barely cross the "full-time" threshold, while others are WAY over it. If all they did was compare pay PER HOUR between men and women, most of the gap disappears.

This is why they don't compare this way.

I think one aspect that gets overlooked is that men may be far more likely to have character traits to them that lead to securing higher pay.

To get paid more you need to fight for it. Over-confidence, determination, assertiveness.

Simply put women may be more willing to put up with lower pay, and prioritise other aspects (job security, good working relationships, comfortable environment) and men more willing to actively demand more.
