Great post op.
My uncle died a month ago, at 59 years of age. He was from a village in the mountains and was a really hard worker. Worked all of his youth on the farm and on construction. First he a was simple manual labor on construction sites but later he learned the trade and became a master mason. Laying bricks and blocks. Moved to another village in his late twenties with my aunt and then worked in a coal mine, along with construction work and still had a small farm near the house. He raised my sister and he built many houses, including the one I live in now, and when he was about to retire he died of lung cancer. Probably caused by working and living close to the coal mine.

As a soon to be divorced father I would be choosing a completely different path for my life (travel the world for months/years at a time) at the moment if kids (4 & 6) were not in the picture. Leaving to travel/adventure would mean that they didn't see me for extended periods since we have split custody. It's been difficult, I know what I want to do but at the same time I also want to be a part of my children's lives but that comes at the expense of what I would be doing if they were not in the equation.

I've had that realization myself. I think coming to terms with mortality is a necessary step in the philosopher. Once you've done it though, your perspective shifts and you realize life is about experiences. And then you're free to pursue what really matters, not hanging on to life itself since it's all you know and the concept of nonexistence is terrifying, but living a full life so your final years aren't regret and suffering. I believe Jeff Bezos has mentioned this, and it's reflected by Erik Erikson's stages of development in ego integrity vs. despair.

Believe me though no one is living to 80 on a lifelong standard american diet, especially if they are overweight as a result of it. Remember that the boomers were raised on naturally organic balanced meals and tended to be more active because of the times. Even with that in consideration, the life expectancy is starting to dip. Exercising, being lean, eating paleo/pescetarian emphasizing whole plant foods, and being happy will all increase the odds of living longer. Don't smoke and don't drink in excess either. Eat lots of cruciferous veggies, berries, and occasionally fast. I don't necessarily believe meat/fish is inherently bad for you, but the conventionally raised stuff has become literally toxic, go for grassfed or organic animal products, and limit consumption. The blue zones tend to eat small amounts of locally raised/caught meat/fish, with the exception of the seventh day Adventists who are purely vegetarian.

Alternatively, they may find a way to cure aging or radically extend lifespan in the next 20-30 years.

It's a good practice to observe situations that you're in (relationship, business obligations, etc.) as objectively as possible and ask yourself whether if you weren't in them you would voluntarily choose them as they are now. If not, imagine a superior or ideal alternative as abstractly as you can--and make the full stop and turn necessary to go in that direction instead. I think that's what empowerment is.

Suffering with dignity the perceived uncertainty of a limited resource such as money and women gives me more than enough reasons to believe i am a fully fledged man of the future living amongst an uncivilized society by simple comparison to my abilities and mindset and those perpetuated in the world.
