You missed the whole point. You're obviously an intelligent man, but I think you've let your arrogance get in the way. We're just normal guys from all walks of life trying to find a better way. Remember to see the forest through the trees.

[–]smithIV 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Often times the more intelligent of men turn out to be the biggest idiots of the bunch.

To imply you are the only one here who picks out bits and pieces of the philosophy which suit you best is the arrogance to which I was reffering. 'Durh Hur it all depends on what the definition of is is' We all seperate the wheat from the chaff in our own way. You're not special. You're not different. You are the same living breathing flesh of the world as I. Now stop whining about it.

We all seperate the wheat from the chaff in our own way

This was a really poignant way of putting it. You're good at explaining these things.

Your meaning of alpha is irrelevant.

http://www.reddit.com/r/TheRedPill/comments/17xmry/acronym_and_glossary_thread/

Alpha – Leader. Somebody who displays high value, or traits that are valued by women. Alpha can refer to a man who exhibits alpha behaviors (more alpha tendancies than beta), but usually used to describe individual behaviors themselves.

Beta – Follower. Sombody who validates others, men & women alike. Beta traits display low value to women. Beta can also be used to describe individual behaviors.

In otherwords:

Alpha = makes vaginas tingle

Beta = does not make vaginas tingle

used to describe individual behaviors themselves

alpha behavior does not mean being alpha, which often just means high value/successful man.

Alpha is a word used to denote a concept for ease of conversation. It has a specific meaning with respect to this sub, as does beta. You used a separate definition of those words and took umbrage to how we feel about people in each respective group. Quite the logical fallacy.

The skinny "weak" and unassertive man with a brilliant creative mind might be admirable, but he's not what's attracting women. We use Alpha to denote a high-status male that is attractive to women. Whatever your definition of alpha is, we don't give a shit. Alpha has a specific meaning here, and we use it to simplify our conversations.

If you're going to critique any of the concepts here, you need to address the ideas we espouse, not make up strawmen to attack.

Which ideas are you addressing? Your thoughts are incoherent. You use flowery language to obfuscate a lack of coherent dialogue.

You dislike our disparaging use of the term Beta, but you don't seem to understand why. Please clarify.

Objectively speaking, he's right. You do write this way. You write like a high school sophomore who just joined the debate team and tries to use as many college-sounding words as he can to sound smart so that he can "win." I really hate to play into this stereotype, but you also write like you are wearing a fedora.

/u/Cyralea explained pretty clearly what this subreddit is referring to when we use the terms "alpha" and "beta," i.e. high-value and low-value behaviors.

I know I shouldn't feed the trolls, and this is some pretty weak trolling. But I honestly can't figure what you get out of all this, why you feel this is worth your time. One of the mysteries of the internet, I guess.

[–]Endorsed ContributorRedBigMan 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The terms themselves aren't important it's the ideology behind them that is important.

Women ultimately want a man who can lead and take charge. They want a man who can confidently do these things. We call these traits alpha because not only do they display importance in our species but they are predominant in the animal kingdom as well. Sexual terminology we use often is derived from terminology used to describe wolf packs. The alpha male in the wolf pack gets to fuck all the bitches (say like 4-5). The beta male might be lucky to get one. All the other males lower on the totem pole don't get any pussy at all unless they either sneak a bang in or overthrow the Alpha. You see the same thing in lions too... the Alpha Lion gets to fuck all the lionesses and any of his allies might get one or two lionesses in the entire pride and even then their women will be trying to get nailed by their boss.

The reason glossaries exist is so that one can look up the word without arguing about semantics as you've done.

The argument you're using sounds a lot like the arguments used by christian apologetics "What does moral mean?" but instead you're questioning alpha. Alpha is part of the language we use around here.

Language exists to convey an idea. If you start to dissect language on a subjective manner you could arguably say "Pineapple nickel compendium." and say it means whatever the hell you want but that isn't how language works.

Same goes with your dissection of what successful means. We aren't talking about successfully getting the high score on your video games, we're talking about the societal definition of success. Women have a pretty narrow view of success when it comes to looking for a mate. Your personal success may align with what they view as success, but then again it may not. They don't care.

Being deliberately obtuse about the language used as a counter to the philosophy doesn't work.

[–][deleted] 12 years ago (24 children) | Copy Link

[–]Seafor_c4 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (23 children) | Copy Link

"We" does not include you. "We" as in TRP as a philosophy. "We" as the ones that use the language. If you don't use the language it doesn't include you. The pineapple example does work because if you had the proper cipher or glossary you'd be able to understand the sentence as I wrote it. "Alpha" when spoken about in TRP has a certain definition. You choosing not to acknowledge the definition is your problem.

And when I say "doesn't work" I mean doesn't work to do anything to the philosophy. If this works to help you better understand the philosophy, good.

Its pretentious beta behavior displayed in the form of a meaningless debate. Go find something to do and get out of your head. If you got the answer, then let that be enough.

[–]Seafor_c4 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

You acknowledge how TRP uses "alpha" and find it problematic but offer no argument how it is such.

All you've done is show you A) built up a strawman argument against it or B) showed you truly didn't understand the way TRP uses the word.

Nowhere have you made a decent argument as to how alpha, the way TRP uses the word, is problematic.

"I am coming around to feeling that there is something really mechanical and one-dimensional (and dare I say 'phony' ) about even the whole idea of parsing people into 'Beta's and 'Alphas'"

Since this is a subreddit about discussing ideas pertaining to TRP I surmised that this was your main premise. If I was mistaken and you were just venting excess vapour then so be it. However if you were actually here to discuss TRP ideas then you base premise using your definition of Alpha and beta is either a strawman and can be dismissed or you didn't know. Either of which has been dealt with.

another brain-filter to reassure yourself that you "really know" what is going on, that you are on the right "side"---just like you think you have swallowed the right "pill."

that is where you are projecting your own disposition onto others, frodo. as many people in this thread have told you, TRP has no agenda. it's not a team. there is no goal to achieve or enemy to vanquish. no population to re-educate into goodthink. just a collection of observations anyone can go out and test for themselves and keep or discard depending on their empirical merit

problematic does have a political connotation and you are intellectually dishonest to claim it does not. it is a favorite term of tumblr social justice warriors and sociology majors. it is in the same basket as egalitarian, marginalized and privileged

let me illustrate

http://www.tumblr.com/search/problematic

http://www.deeplyproblematic.com/

what's even funnier is that you used it in the context of social dynamics, which is exactly what progressives do when reality does not match their idea of what should be.

you certainly quack like a duck

I'm not the only one in this thread who has noticed your abnormal communication patterns (no value judgement here lol). if you want to engage a group in good faith conversation it is beneficial to speak the same language. making no effort to do so is disrespectful

You reduce it to sexual-arousal, but it begs so many questions of which women are aroused by which qualities, which, again, is so contextual and contingent.

the claim of red pill theory is that alpha traits are the set that is attractive to the vast majority of women, regardless of context. it is a generalization about women, not about the traits. and if you cultivate these traits in yourself, you will be more successful in your sexual pursuits. on average. if you're trying to pursue a lesbian who cultivates masculine traits in herself and pursues feminine women, you obviously will not be helped by having alpha traits

you can dispute this until you're blue in the face and you won't change anything because unlike feminism or any number of other progressive ideologies, TRP is not driving an agenda, it's not trying to get everyone to change their behavior or shame them about their instincts. it's a set of observations and prejudices about women that are for private use. take it or leave it. we don't give a fuck if the entire world says it's incorrect. any man can go out, put these principles into practice and see for themselves that they are valid. no peer-reviewed and church approved paper will invalidate social phenomena experienced first-hand, repeated again and again

It also begs the question of what 'successful' means, or "high-value."

both of these reduce to power, or rather displays that imply power. I don't think it is necessary to explain why powerful men are attractive for women

[–]Robodroidbot[S] -2 points-1 points0 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It must be great to be a powerful man. Did you make yourself a ribbon, and notch the bed-post each time you actualize your principles?

[–]Fitch0y 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Abandon these glossaries, this pre-fabricated conceptual structure, think for yourself.

How can we discuss, using words like that and they have a different meaning for everyone??

[–]noblepaladin 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Life is full of incomplete information. You must make decisions based on whatever model you have in your mind, and you must adjust it as you receive more information. It is very easy to act all philosophical and claim intellectual superiority as an observer. I can watch a football game and point out tons of mistakes that the pro football players make, but it doesn't mean I can stand a chance on the football field (or even if I had the physicality to play at the pro level, it doesn't mean I could have done any better with a limited point-of-view and having to react in real time).

When you have incomplete information, you have to go with what is most likely to be true. Sure a scrawny Nobel Prize winning scientist can be alpha in his social group. But in general, scrawny people are less alpha than bigger people. If you walk into a room and you don't know anybody, you have to act with what information you can pick up and adjust as you gain more information. You will undoubtedly misjudge a lot of people. But you will have a better result than not judging at all.

This is actually perfectly normal and people do it all the time. It's just not politically correct to say. I'm sure you don't treat the bum on the street the same as you would treat a guy wearing a nice suit. You won't treat someone with a criminal history the same as someone who has a clean record (even though criminal could be perfectly reformed). Most successful people I know simply make slightly better judgments than most. It's like a casino playing the 51/49 odds. The house always wins in the end due to the law of large numbers. The gambler might have occasional success, he might even go home with several thousands of dollars in winnings on some days, but in the long run, all his disposable income goes to the casino.

There is no guarantee that you will get a high quality woman if you lift weights. There is no guarantee that you will have a high paying job if you go to an Ivy League school. There is no guarantee that money will make you more happy. There is no guarantee that you will have great relationships if you avoid single moms. But when people string many of these choices together, they tend to get positive outcomes. At the end of the day, TRP isn't about being right or wrong (factually or morally), it is about executing the best strategy given incomplete information. This is not like a football game where you can choose to be a simple observer and be able to watch from a wide camera angle with the aid of replays and slow motion. You have to be a player on field, you can't stop or pause. You have to make decisions on the fly when you can't see or know everything. Red Pill is one strategy of doing this.

[–]1rporion 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Um...

All models are wrong, but some are useful. The Red Pill Model is the best I have found so far, but I would immediately ditch it if I found one that described reality better. Which, incidentally, would be very redpill.

Then, a lot of the language used is what it is, because those altnet geeks in the beginning where somewhat aspie types who tried to teach other somewhat aspie types how social interactions worked.

As best as they could describe them.....

Finally, you are making the beginner mistake of confusing alpha with "men I admire" or "a man I would like to be"...

No, its a mindset, someone who pursues his goals with a passion and a woman is either along for the ride or she can go for a hike.

Google Cory Worthington, this guy is a little shit, but he is pure alpha.

[–]1rporion 7 points8 points9 points 12 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

You might have noticed that my definition of "alpha" as far as I am willing to give one is completely free of any moral and ethical judgement.

Also, it does not have to hold true for all goals and passions.

It makes the panties wet and that is all that counts for a definition of "alpha".

The trap you are running into is that you still would like women to acknowledge what you think makes a man "worthy".

You want them to think that this or that should be "alpha" or your idealized self should be "alpha" and the truth is they like men who dont give a shit just like you like T&A.

You're missing the point of it all, man.

There may be a community from which we all gather information, but the goal is personal development. This is a tool shed. You take the tools you need and leave the rest. Right now, you have a hole to dig and have grabbed a rake.

You have an issue with how other people in the tool shed have selected their tools. Do not worry about the tools others are picking up.

Identify your problem, read here and absorb information, then take the information that applies to your problem and put it into action to improve yourself.

[–]down_with_whomever 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Alpha/Beta as a way to describe a person makes sense as a continuum. To describe certain behaviors, it makes sense as a binary label.

And Red vs Blue pill makes sense because TBP directly contradicts what's usually believed on TRP. So it makes sense that they're be a dichotomy between the two.

I think maybe what you're having issues with is the vague definition of alpha/beta?

Can we really say a certain behavior is "alpha"? What made it that? And how frequently must a man behave as an "alpha" in order to be called that?

But ditching the argument doesn't make sense. Because it's here for a reason.

Refining and digging deeper seems like the way to go.

I am trying to develop it conceptually by suggesting that its terms, while perhaps useful developmentally in the history of thought, are out-moded. False alternatives. One can ask a question but another can feel the premises upon which it hinges are disputable, so the idea of there being a right or wrong answer is irrelevant.

The reason, for me, is that it is an example of something I no longer find relevant or useful.

So... you're developing the argument by saying its irrelevant? I feel like you're saying we should stop talking about what is alpha/beta. How is this not "ditching the argument"?

And when I say it's here for a reason, I mean there is a "point" or "purpose" because discussing alpha vs beta behaviors. So finding the terms irrelevant is saying the reasons we're even discussing alpha/beta are irrelevant too. But that is not the case. We discuss them for a reason. Dig into that reason. Refine whatever it is we're talking about. But they are not "irrelevant".

I usually just lurk here, but I felt the need to reply after seeing this post. As a disclaimer, I wouldn't describe myself as "living a RP-life", but I think your criticism is not based on a solid understanding of the message of this sub-reddit.

First of all, I think it is unfair to accuse the current RP theory, theory of game if you may say so, of being pre-fabricated and ad-hoc. Unlike history, for example, you do have a chance to go out and test directly the responses of members of the opposite sex to the strategies presented here. Note that I am not saying the field reports here are correct and truthful, or the theory here correctly predicts everything to a good degree of accuracy. I am just saying that the theory is built on the go by many people, and if you go out, apply the theory and see an unexpected result, you can always come here and discuss it to see if an assumption is uncalled for, if the execution was wrong, or if an axiom simply does not survive experiment.

Other posters have already described that you seem to be confusing what "alpha" and "beta" stand for here. Obviously, as different people's understandings are bound to be non-uniform, there might be some variance to the definition of the word. However, the generally accepted definition follows the one described in Rational Male. As for the skinny "weak" and unassertive man with a brilliant creative mind, your definitions of weak and unassertive might need be challenged there instead. Most, if not all, successful men are exactly those who can stand their ground against challenges. While those who let much slide might be relatively successful, they never seem to achieve top - making that position non-optimal in fulfilling anyone's full potential.

The idea of redpill versus bluepill might seem dichotomous, but that is because they were constructed as such. In turn, most people end up being shades of redpill and bluepill, and the terms are generally used to describe a way of thought or the nature of an action. Basically, the RP way of seeing things would be to constantly question what is going on and try to construct a systematic way of describing events (moreso social events, emphasis on heterosexual sexual interactions), as opposed to going with the much publicised way of "just going by the feelings". There is a reason STEM fields are called "redpill occupations" around here.

Now, you might say that people do not just say "go by your feelings", and they do have explanations for many things. But one thing I have observed, is that a lot of people outside this sub seem to be wording their advice in very vague terms, like "you should try more", "you should act natural", "you should treat the other person as a person". These are definitely not wrong, but they are either self-evident things that the person is already trying, or they just do not tell anything. Furthermore, the advice is usually laced with meaningless feel-good phrases like "there is someone for everyone", "you are good the way you are" and so on. The RP rhetoric is relentless and harsh, but I feel I have been able to explain a few things that I just wasn't able to understand before by reading up on here.

Also, if you want a discussion, you might want to not end your original post with a snark remark. Kind of undermines your point when you complain about other people responding with snark remarks.

No, I think Athol Kay has the right take on it, alpha and beta are two independent sets of traits.

Alpha makes you HAWT and beta makes you dependable.

You just cannot outbeta your alpha...

Or, to put it into plain English, if a woman does not respect you as a man, your commitment means shit.

Look, obviously what is taught here does not hit a nerve yet.

Thats ok.

Why dont you go out in the world, learn a thing or two, try to get noone pregnant or some such and maybe in a year or three this will all make more sense?

No, actually, you are supposed to use your time and resources efficiently so that you can use your penis in the most extravagant manner.

Alpha is the word used to describe the man that is high enough in the hierarchy of the group in question that he becomes attractive to women.

Here's what it doesn't means: The strongest, the smartest, the most creative, the richest, the hardest-working, the most patient, the prettiest, the most loyal, the most honorable, the most analytical, the best fighter, the funniest, the most ruthless.

A lot of the times these men are alpha, but a man can lack any of these qualities and still be alpha of the group in question. In the past social dominance got you laid but also wealthy and influential. Today everything has changed, but women's sexual preference hasn't. That's why we talk about alphas and betas. It hasn't got to do with success for anything but with women. But alpha traits gives you higher chance of success with everything else as well.

Like I hear what you said. I really do. I am also against any and all dogma. However in my personal opinion TRP is more than a dogma. TRP is what should be. Trp just is.

If you do not like it or agree with the philosophy, you talking against it is only going to make us believe in it more. I believe there is term for that some where I just cant remember it right now.

Dude you are so annoying. You know what it is with you? You act like a bitch, you just want to argue, and debate and be right. That type of shit may feel cool, and you feel like you win small victories here and there but that is a real quick way to alienate yourself. Also its a real quick way to get punched in the goddamn face.
