This is a saying that I have always taken to heart ever since I started traveling. I realized that once I landed in my hometown after an epic camping trip or a boozy, rowdy week across Europe and I returned a monster. I handled every opportunity with enthusiasm and poise and knocked every girl I met head over heels. But it faded drastically after being back for about a month… I had to ask why.

It is because routine is the death of progress.

What is technically a routine though? It is anything you repeat with nominal change. When I was back in my town I slipped back into my same routine of my job, eating, drinking, working out and sports I was used to week in and week out. I had no new perspectives and boring stories to tell after a month in.

Even lifting programs are inherently built to progress, move you up in weights and move you along to more advanced programs (i.e. – SS -> 5/3/1 -> PHUL). If you have been doing SS for a year now and haven’t upped your maxes in any big lifts for a while, you are doing it wrong.

Take a minute and think about all the shit you do on a daily basis. What do you eat, drink, how do you get to work, what radio station do you listen to, what kind of books do you read, how do you greet people, who do you hang out with? Take one of these things and CHANGE IT. Learn a new dish, try a new genre of book out, talk to a colleague you have never talked to, end every conversation holstering your guns, it doesn’t matter just fucking do it.

Becoming stagnant is becoming the least attractive versions of ourselves and becoming comfortable being stagnant reinforces itself in a viscous circle. Make sure you are always moving in some new direction that betters you. The worst that can happen is it could teach you something new or give you a story to tell later.

Plus achieving new goals and experimenting with new things breeds confidence and new areas to hold mutual ground with people.

Get out there and fucking change things up.

Lessons Learned: Frequently improve even the smallest of your day to day routines and you will benefit from it.

EDIT: Good commentary here which is why I love TRP. This is one of my first attempts at these kinds of posts so the criticism is welcome. I think stagnancy as opposed to routine is a better word which we get caught up on. Many things require repetition to master and progress in the form of a routine. But always possess the willpower to push harder or reinvent what you did the day before.
