Even if you're not passing on your genetic legacy, you are passing on a legacy nonetheless.

Obviously, there's no evolutionary advantage to adopting. Socially, there's a big one.

In the old days, you didn't just have kids to pass on your genetic legacy, you had kids so you'd have someone to take care of you when you were old...couldn't have your own? There's always orphans who will be grateful as fuck if you take them in and raise them.

The adoptive parents of my baby are a gay couple, so from the beginning they knew if they were going to parent at the most the child would only have genetics from one of them. I can't explain why it made it more comfortable for me to have a gay male couple and not to a straight couple who's last option was adoption after being burned out by infertility.

I support adoption.

But I also don't see the huge deal in being with a girl who has a kid, if you're into the whole kid thing.

It seems like pretty much the same thing. Not yours genetically, but essentially yours in every other aspect.

Theoretically, it's great and every culture of any significance has practised it.

In reality - in the west overseas adoption is basically kidnapping. All adoption outside of the foster system is a gigantic money making machine. ($50,000 to adopt a kid? Someone's pocketing a lot of money.)

If you're smart about it? One of the best things anyone can do. But be smart about it.

Source: Was/am a foster parent, "accidentally" became an adoptive parent cuz of that.

Cuckoldry. Unless the couple is infertile, in which case it is the only option to at least pass on your cultural heritage.

I would like more women/families to adopt rather than expend resources on methods to increase fertility, but the drive to produce one's own offspring is understandable.

I suppose there's also room to acknowledge the potentially heavy mental and physical burden (episiotomy, post partum depression) of pregnancy that could be avoided with adoption.

On the other hand, I don't want any kids at all, so I suppose I'm a "dead end" outlier.
