"Diamonds are beta tax. A girl in love would marry her man with an onion ring." - LaidNYC

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Diamonds like women are literally a dime a dozen. If a woman is truly special and I was comfortable enough to trust her I'd buy her a Ruby...something truly special and rare. But Unicorns dont exist so more money for me!

[–]floor-pi 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link

This may be true, but then, any sort of a socially well adjusted person knows that a $10 ring isn't acceptable (regardless of beta blah blah) unless it's by necessity, and certainly, the manner in which he proposed is unacceptable too under any circumstances, for a couple who have 'marriage' as a plan.

The comments in that link above are silly. The guy is maladjusted and has issues, there is no defending him. If that's what you're all aspiring to then i think TRP needs to do a bit of goal setting.

[–]Glorious_Master 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

10$ rings are toys for girls if you live in a poor country you have other norms probably

also don't marry unless you are both orthodox jews/muslims and your rabbanate/sharia court is valid

[–]floor-pi 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I don't see anything wrong with marriage in terms of TRP ethos.

But yeah you're right, $10 rings are toys. This guy is going to look like a moron to every person in his whole life, from alpha to beta guys, sexy to dowdy girls, what he has done, and how he is acting, is not something to defend or aspire to. Acting like him will do you no favours in your life unless your plan is to be socially isolated.

[–]Glorious_Master 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

maybe in trp ethos, but ths odds are stacked against you. even if shes wife material she can be influenced/change over a decade or so. which means... longer ltr prior to marrige if you so want it.

also if he honestly wanted to marry her, said ring isn't exactly something he won't see or won't be relatedto him if she reluctently accepted that.

Yep absolutely, I never even thought of that.

...LaidNyc wants his accreditation. LOL. The senseless plagiarism!

[–]KJL13 5 points6 points7 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

If you're getting married, a $9.99 ring is retarded. Even if you don't want to do diamonds, at least get gold (or white gold) so it will last and won't irritate your spouse's skin. He could have easily been sub $200.

Gotta be careful with exotic materials. In the event of an emergency where it needs to be cut off, having some fancy metal could cost you your finger.

[–]KJL13 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah I mean if you can't buck up $200, you shouldn't be getting married. I honestly can't think of a worse way to start off a marriage", Oh I'm about to sign a contract that will give this woman half of my shit in the event of a divorce. I'd better piss her off first." Consider it an investment that when she looks at the ring she'll get tingles instead of resentment.

She was taken advantage of... Because she had to pay her way...

She keeps using that word, i dont think she knows what it means.

Who gives a fuck about /r/relationships?

This is irrelevant. Lots of people hate us. This adds nothing.

[–]dvrzero 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I posted in that thread and had 30 down votes as of last time I checked. Do I get a prize? I even managed to use "rascal" and "home shopping network" in one sentence.

I wasn't even trolling... I just get sick of memes on subreddits sometimes.

My favorite part was when the girl who originally posted in Relationships couldn't figure out how to answer a simple fucking question about what attracted her to this guy in the first place, beyond the generic Disney answers. Good example of the difference between the rational-core mind and emotional-core mind of the respective sexes.

the girl who originally posted in Relationships couldn't figure out how to answer a simple fucking question about what attracted her to this guy

In her defense, here's what she said: "he is smart, driven, motivated, attractive, funny, family oriented among other things. We shared similar interests as well and have great chemistry."

What were you looking for? Like, physically what attracted her to him? The thing is, even after the ring gaff, she could probably still say he's hot (if he was before).

[–]_whistler -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Yes, those are the Disney answers. I initially asked why she stayed with him if he was such a shitty character, and she responded with 'I loved him'. So I explained that this was not a descriptive enough answer because you don't just randomly fall in love with people. I wanted her to actually think about what, specifically, was the reason she stayed with a man who 'was always the taker in the relationship' - her characterization of him.

She apparently couldn't perform this mental exercise, and came back with all the canned qualities every single woman will give you about their random Prince Charming. I mean, substitute the 'he is' with a 'I'm looking for a guy who is', and you have every dating advert ever. I got tired of her lack of effort, and tuned out.

[–]TRP Vanguardnicethingyoucanthave 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I wanted her to actually think about what, specifically, was the reason she stayed with a man who 'was always the taker in the relationship' - her characterization of him.

Well, isn't the answer: "in spite of him taking and not giving, he was smart, driven, motivated, physically attractive, funny, family-oriented"

Isn't the answer that those qualities are so attractive that she put up with the stuff she didn't like

[–]_whistler -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

It was her attempt at an answer. But it's not a retrospective answer - which is what I asked her to do, apply the same retrospective filter to her past attraction as she had applied to her current revulsion. It's a current, hamster-driven answer with no specifics whatsoever.

'Because he's a shitty guy and that's how I feel about him, but I also know I don't like shitty guys, why did I stay with him? Well, what are all the qualities I know I like about men? I like them to be smart, driven, motivated, physically attractive, funny, family-oriented...hey, he must have been all of those things!'

It's not an honest answer, it's a hamster answer. Which is why I ditched the convo. At times I've had productive conversations with women who are able to get around their hamster, but this wasn't shaping up to be one of those times.

[–]TRP Vanguardnicethingyoucanthave 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's not an honest answer, it's a hamster answer.

If she had a sudden moment of perfect clarity, what would she say? "I was attracted to him because he's an asshole" Is that it?

[–]_whistler -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't know what she'd say. If I already knew the answer, I wouldn't have to ask the question. But just because I don't know the real answer, doesn't mean I can't spot a phony one.

[–]floor-pi 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

smart, driven, motivated, physically attractive, funny, family-oriented

How descriptive do you want her to be? He's funny, smart and physically attractive, do you need a list of jokes he tells?
