Coping with gender stereotypes in the world is difficult enough without having scientists telling us that our bloody brains are doing it all wrong, too.

It's dangerous when neuroscience starts moving merely from stating what is 'the norm' to defining what is normative.

What on Earth is this guy trying to say? It sounds like he's implying that neuroscienctists shouldn't report their findings if (and only if) they imply an innate difference between the sexes.

Let's imagine that he gets his way. Five years later, he and his cohorts would proudly declare "See? There's no science that supports differences between the brains of men and women!"

actually this study seems to imply that the differences are not wired from birth: they arise later on, due to the effects of society shaping the brain when it's most plastic, during childhood and adolescence.

Someone didn't read the article. Someone only knows how to repeat their spoon-fed feminist slogans. From the article:

"If you look at functional studies, the left of the brain is more for logical thinking, the right of the brain is for more intuitive thinking. So if there's a task that involves doing both of those things, it would seem that women are hardwired to do those better," Verma said. "Women are better at intuitive thinking. Women are better at remembering things. When you talk, women are more emotionally involved – they will listen more."

She added: "I was surprised that it matched a lot of the stereotypes that we think we have in our heads. If I wanted to go to a chef or a hairstylist, they are mainly men."

She literally said "hardwired".

Ahhh, but that doesn't matter! Changes in brain chemistry coinciding with the flood of sex hormones during puberty are certainly a social construct.

The Philadelphia Inquirer had a particularly obnoxious headline for this story in the print edition, something like "It's Official: Men's Brains are Miswired!" I found the story on the online edition, but the headline had been changed to something more subtle.

I worry that this result could be quite easily misinterpreted by misogynists who like to claim that men and women are 'just different', whereas actually this study seems to imply that the differences are not wired from birth: they arise later on, due to the effects of society shaping the brain when it's most plastic, during childhood and adolescence.

Look, naturally we're wired for survival purposes. Logically this has it's baseline i.e. the brain we're born with and to an extent the brain that develops up until the end of puberty. Men are generally better at perception and women are generally better at multi-tasking. It's a fact haha! Given neuroplasticity, if a Woman was say to train and become a darts player for example, then over a short space of time her brain would start rewiring to be able to continually become better at that particular skill. Similarly if a Man became a single parent, you better believe his brain will rewire to handling multi-tasking more. Whatever you think and do, your brain reacts to that and changes accordingly given repetition and the signal of importance in the event. Being chased by a tiger would result in faster brain changes than your schoolmate chasing you, because of memory strength, the stress of the event etc etc.

The article is more interesting than the research, going on and on about how women are better at this and better at that as a result of their brain organization. And yet there is not a mention of what men might be better at. It appears that we've reached a point where not only can you not say anything bad about women; it's politically incorrect to even suggest that there might be anything good about men.

Research cannot "prove" anything. The idea of "proving" anything is fundamentally impossible and contradictory to all tenets of science. It is a personal pet peeve of mine, but I cannot stand quiet when people bastardize science. "Proving" something in scientific realm suggests that we fundamentally know something to always be true and have infallible evidence to support the claim. Both of these are impossible to have. Science only works when we all the possibility that everything has the potential to be incorrect. Every scientific law, theory and idea you know has an accepted limitation value and the ability to have contrary evidence to be shown. What this research suggests and this should be titled, "Research has provided statistical evidence to suggests that male and female brains act differently." Nothing is proven here and nothing in science will ever be proven.

This study - like all the "brains are different" studies - is just silly "get headlines" fluff.

I think it was Scott Adams (from dilbert) who said something like - All those studies that show that one kind of persons brain is different than anothers? Well no shit - the brain is the tool you use for thinking. Obviously if all people are not the same, then different peoples brains are different. I'd also wager to guess that your grandmothers computer hard drive is "physically" different than a teenage boys - of course it is, they're different people with different things they do with the computer. And likewise, different people who use their brains differently are going to have differences in their brains. Duh.
