"Failure IS an option." "The more you fail, the closer you get to success." "If you learn from defeat, you haven't really lost."
Maybe it's just me, but I'm finding more and more that we are living in a culture which not only mitigates the impacts of failure, but goes so far as to celebrate it.
By definition, for man or animal, failure is the worst thing that can happen during the course of any endeavor. Yes, it's something you can learn from, but it's something that we should work towards avoiding at all costs.
It seems as though modern culture promotes failure as this thing that is a requirement for eventual super-success, and that each failure you make brings the promise of getting exactly what you want out of an endeavor or out of life. Unfortunately, modern culture doesn't stress one simple fact of life: you don't always get a second chance at things.
For soldiers and the officers commanding them, failure means death. The people around said soldiers and officers may be able to learn from your death...but you, as the dead guy, can learn nothing. For doctors, failure means the death of a patient. And in certain high-stress professions, failure to "win" or beat out your competition means anything from reprimand to job loss...which leads to a whole other set of problems.
No one can argue that failure is a critical teacher, but some would have us convinced that failure and its first cousin, voluntary mediocrity, are just as good as actually winning.
The common idea is that you learn more about something through failure than through victory, but is this just a fallacy designed to make people who fail at things feel better about said failure? Failure teaches us what NOT to do; end of story, and it's nothing that we should ever shoot for unless we're experimenting with something in order to get a big (guaranteed) payoff later on.
Failure is NOT your friend.
