This quote from best of reddit nailed the modern notion of marriage for me and I think it dovetails with TRP,

"Most people don't really seem to get the idea of a marriage. The ultimate purpose of a marriage, sans religion and romance, is to establish an estate, family unit, and partnership between two romantic partners. That is, you are trusting your SO to enter into a sort of business agreement with yourself. You are trusting them with legal matters, financial matters, management matters, and all sorts of other powers. This is why it's actually a good idea to treat a marriage like you're going into business together with your potential spouse: Are roles and responsibilities laid out? Will this be an even partnership, or a president/vice president structure? Is your SO comfortable with the part they will play? Are they aware of what's expected of them? Are expectations realistic, and can they be met? Will there ever be a time where your partner needs to step out of his or her role, and take on more responsibility? Perhaps, even, for an extended period of time? Is he/she trustworthy? Can they be trusted to uphold the "mission statement" of the "company"? Can they be trusted to make competent business decisions? Can they be trusted to have company loyalty and NOT takeoff the minute a potentially better opportunity arises? Can they be trusted not to extort or embezzle against the company? Can they be trusted to hold good faith in the company? Are they capable? Are they hardworking? Do they make the required effort, or at least the effort asked of them? Are they the kind of person to go the extra mile, or do what is required and nothing else? Can they learn? Can they sacrifice when required? Do they understand that times are just as capable as being tough as they are wonderful? Are they up for potential new ventures, or keeping the "brand" fresh? Whenever problems arise, how do they go about solving it (if at all)? Do they take pride in their work? Is the "job" just another job to them? Are they in it "just for the paycheck"? Will they bring the full force of their creativity and spirit to the team? Will they make use of their talents in such a way to help the team flourish? Does the thought of "growing the business" excite them? How will resources be handled? Who gets to make what decision? Is this, again, a partnership or a president/vice president setup? Are both SOs playing to their strengths? Are both SOs getting the most out of their respective investments and work? How are beneficiaries setup, benefits divvied out, and bonuses handled? It sounds kind of cold comparing love and romance to a business, but that's what a lot of marriage is. That's why so many guys freak out over it. Guys do stand to lose a lot, and so do women. I think that's also why there's a lot of divorce today. People don't take marriage seriously, and don't really think about what it means, and the power it can have in your life besides just "husband and wife". Which is weird, of course, because there's no reason to take marriage lightly. You shouldn't just marry a friend or a lover, you should very well marry a partner. Anything else, when you think about it, really is idiotic and setting yourself up for disappointment."
