Great post. I began law school this year and one of the first lectures given to the class was how to write with active voice.
I respectfully disagree with /u/NightwingTRP. To me TRP is a community where I can go to learn and gain insight. Not all posts will be directly related to sexual strategy. If this post helps a reader's writing skills resulting in an improvement in school, then it is just as much a guide to raise SMV as a guide on how to speak properly.
[–]Maleden 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Absolutely. If TRP teaches the maintanance of frame, why not encourage that through non-verbal mediums?
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It also relates to the central idea of man as an actor, not the one acted upon. How we use language shapes how we think and how we think shapes how we live our lives.

I'd also like a post on how to fix a 62 T-Bird transmission right here in TRP. It would be equally relevant.

Been there, done that. Law students, professors, and lawyers have a bad habit of deploying gobbledygook. If you want to see some real style then read decisions by Lord Denning or Master Funduk.
I see this relating indirectly to sexual strategy if you pursue internet dating. OKCupid and such favour guys who have good writing skills.

It also helps with text game, writing online profiles, and professional emails. Immensely.

This is a very important thing to internalize if your goal is to maximize your masculinity and communicative power. Use active voice not only in writing, but in speaking as well. Passive voice is the vehicle of the insecure, unwilling to take a strong position, weasel words, outright liars... you see the pattern.
The simplest and most straightforward use of active voice begins with the removal, or at least the purposeful use, of being verbs. Quite simply, one can define a being verb as any variation on the verb “to be.”
This has a name, it is called E-Prime, meaning "English minus the verb 'to be.'" Learning to think and speak (when appropriate) in E-prime is a cognitive tool that helps prevent attribution errors that are one barrier to understanding people's motivations and behaviors.

Great post for those in business too. I sometimes run into terrible passive sentences that don't even name the subject sometimes. For example, in many cases there are two or three parties at play, so when I read sentences like, "revenue was restated" I am left wondering, "by who?". I waste time going back to the author to not only ask "who?" but also ask the author to write it in an active voice. I advise my direct reports to use active voice in their emails and presentations to avoid confusion.
The goal isn't to be an expert in college level English for business writing, but this is a big theme in sentence construction that your boss or peers could notice.

These verbs and phrases invoke passive voice by distancing the subject from the action in the sentence.
Side note. When reading people and determining if they are lying, They will often do this exact thing. People will distance themselves with vocabulary to anything seen as a negative. If they commit a crime or are being questioned they will use excessive words and displacement to distance themselves from said accusation. Where as someone at no fault will be very direct and straight to the point.

An additional few tips for those who wish to write/speak for masses. (note, improving writing and grammar improves speaking as well).
simplicity is great. Know your topic well enough to explain it to a five year old.
show don't tell.
Read as much if not more than you write. (higher quality content than your own preferably in your own desired reached cohort).
Read backwards to edit.
never go straight to release, sit on everything you write until you're not in that mode anymore before editing.
If using English, there's almost necessarily a better singular word to use than an adverb modifying a verb, or an adjective modifier. (very bad = abysmal, too dumb = idiotic, too big = humongous, etc)
be precise and concise. Modern attention spans can't wait long to get to the point.
And my personal peeve, know the difference between vagueness and ambiguity.

Could you explain "Read backwards to edit"?
[–]TheRedStoic 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
Ah, when editing start at he end of the section, read it backwards sentence by sentence until the start of the section. You'll catch a lot more mistakes than going through it forward a few times.

Interesting, I never really thought of it in those terms, but did it anyway when I would look at a sentence and think "this is kinda exhausting to look at, i'll shorten it somehow"

Thanks for this excellent post.
Although I'm a secondary school teacher I often find myself slipping in areas of grammar such as this. Also I'm a new blogger and should really tidy up my use of written English.
[–]Cashman124 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Thanks for the advice. Maybe I should of attended more writing writing classes in college to get a better sense of writing. I even look back at some of my comments and think how repetitive using these passive words.
[–]1Entropy-7 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The general rule is to always use the active voice. Only use the passive voice if - for whatever reason - the object is more important than the subject with respect to your narrative.
As a tongue-in-cheek example, compare: 1) John fucked Mary. 2) Mary was fucked by John.
If Mary, rather than John, is the focus then #2 is more appropriate despite being written in the passive voice.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I use the active voice all of the time so that when I need to use the passive, it is effective. Like, "unfortunately, the letter was not sent." Who did not send it? Who knows? And nothing is admitted.
[–]ShavedApel 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Active voice is actually recommended for scientific technical writing also.

Active voice tends to garner better results in any sort of non-scientific, persuasive writing
It works better in scientific writing too. The reason people use passive in peer-reviewed lit is that it does "sound smarter". But if you use active voice, you are forced to actually BE smarter and/or write a better paper.

TRP is about communicating ideas... not quality prose. That's why I have not written such a guide already.
Also, style and skill in writing will actively work against you in some fields. e.g. academia. Many journals are full of people who can't write prose to save their life. Hell! Even the places where quality prose is meant to be valued (publishing) don't value it. You'll find markedly different quality in the prose of the bestsellers over the past 5 years. Look at journalism for another example.
[–]BurritoHunter 17 points17 points17 points 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I specifically mentioned that scientific writing tends to favor passive voice, I'm in academia myself.
What is your distinction between quality prose and communicating ideas? A good idea can still be communicated poorly, and fail to get exposure because of that.
[–]Endorsed ContributorRedPillDad 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
In studying marketing, I learned the value of utilizing powerful adverbs and avoiding flowery adjectives. The more active the voice, the more it stirs a prospect to action. And the more active the voice, the more masculinity it projects.
Read Harry Potter if you want adjective-filled blather and endless layers of insignificant details. Give me Treasure Island, or The Count of Monte Cristo, where shit actually happens.

Good. I'm glad we're in agreement on academia, however I think you haven't understood what I was trying to get at. Let me restate to try and be clearer. For me, TRP is all about providing pragmatic advice for men to get what they want out of life and how this fits in with a sexual strategy and overall life strategy. I challenge that being able to write in active voice is practically irrelevant. It is not a necessity to succeed. It is a luxury. It definitely won't help you to convince people of your PoV any better than not having it. However, convincing people in its purest form is a totally different topic and belongs under Machiavellianism/social dynamics - i.e. one of many tools which is useful but not essential. So I won't go any further into that.
My examples were simply to back up the initial point. I believe it is better to adopt the pragmatic approach of deciding your goal first and then adapting your writing style appropriately to fit. Going with or without quality prose/using the active voice is mutually exclusive to being successful as it will help or hinder depending on the situation. - And I can't think of any situations where it 100% helps.
You are correct. I sense we have different ideas by what quality prose means. I see as one of those intangibles which doesn't really have an adequate definition, yet we all know what it is. (A little like intelligence. We all know intelligence when it's demonstrated, yet even the researchers who study the topic can't agree on a definition.) So I'll simply say that the difference is that you can communicate well without requiring quality prose. It depends who you're communicating with - so for example there are some less intelligent members of society who are likely to be unable to understand quality prose because of their poor education/unwillingness to be educated. However you can still communicate well with these people if you adapt to speak their language (for want of a better phrase)... but again we'll end up drifting into Machiavellianism and the pros/cons thereof. So I'll leave it there.

I agree with this statement. From my point of view, learning the difference between active and passive voice is a key strategy for a strong writer. Learning to write actively will broaden the types of writing styles that a person can effectively use.
I think that we agree on many points, and I appreciate your comments. I should have made the practical benefits of these writings choices clearer in my post.

learning the difference between active and passive voice is a key strategy for a strong writer.
This is the crux of it. Guys can be very successful in all areas they're personally interested in, without needing to become a strong writer.
I should have made the practical benefits of these writings choices clearer in my post.
It will improve the strength of the piece and its application. People will be able to see if it is a skill they want/need or not, depending on their plans.

Nightwing, this man is just making a helpful suggestion and a contribution to TRP. No need to nit pick and argue for the sake of argument.
The same goes if this were a post on meditation, sure guys can be very successful without needing to meditate but it probably won't hurt.
[–]Senior Endorsed ContributorNightwingTRP -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I believe your example does not apply here. Meditation has far wider general value than improving your prose. Using meditation to improve your emotional control, confidence, focus etc etc will impact on your work performance, your game, your mood, your fitness. Improving your prose will not improve enough beyond your prose and I believe it can potentially have a negative impact if your social circle consists of anybody who actively discriminates against intelligence and education like this.
I am not saying the piece has no value. I am saying the generalised value is not high enough to justify the investment of time required. The OP does not agree and we have agreed to disagree.
I am not arguing for the sake of argument. I am stating my opinion on the value of the piece to a Red Pill man.
[–]CardinalGuitar 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Meditation has far wider general value than improving your prose.
That is an opinion.
Using meditation to improve your emotional control, confidence, focus etc etc will impact on your work performance, your game, your mood, your fitness.
Your ability to articulate plays a phenomenal role in how people perceive you, your boss being one of them (work performance). I can use different words to express how I am feeling (mood). Also, how does sitting in one place in a relaxed pose improve my fitness or game?
It's evident you need to work on your grammar, you are just throwing your raw thoughts onto this page. Look, people are responding negatively towards your unstructured argument.
I am saying the generalised value is not high enough to justify the investment of time required.
What? It took me under 30 seconds to read OP's post and put it into action.
TRP is about communicating ideas... not quality prose.
How do I communicate ideas over the internet without using words? Being more descriptive and using a wider variety of language helps portray my idea in a more intelligent light.

Well, that was vapid. Nice to see that you've decided to let the rules of language be your master, I guess.
